The question is would you trade Tyler Hansbrough for Greg Stiemsma and Jordan Hamilton...

Trading Hayes and Fields, in a perfect world, would be best but; there's no way that can happen. Apparently "cash considerations are limited to 3M/player". This means one player would be coming back the other way. More than likely a player whose contract is as bad as Fields but, twice as long. We could let them both expire but, we'd have to carry the for the remainder of the season.

Hmm ... Probably yes. Do we really need a 3rd string PF?

That's not framed correctly. It would basically be Hansbrough for just one of them. We can already keep one.

Is that a joke? We're already very deep on the perimeter. Meanwhile none of our backup Cs have the physical or basketball tools to play big minutes at PF. Hansbrough is the only viable option if one of Amir or Pat miss time, which is pretty much guaranteed to happen.

Hamilton really doesn't fill any kind of need. It's nice that he's scored some points in the preseason and all, but adding him doesn't do much, especially if you're subtracting a 9-11 piece and he's a 13-15 piece.

Perhaps not in October 2014, but he might in February 2016. The general manager needs to look ahead, and this guy is showing real NBA potential. It is similar to the typical draft night dilemma: do you draft for talent or do you draft for need? I think Mr. Ujiri tends to draft for talent, since he is so good at the trading game.

All the issues raised by DanH are spot on regarding just waiving Fields to free roster spot and keep others.

One I'd add to it that I didn't see is the 'complicated' requirements for trades to be completed.

You need to have salary to take salary when you're over the cap.

If you waive Fields, not only the tax and revenue sharing implications, but now you've lost upwards of a $7.75-9.25M trade chip come the deadline for any team looking to free up salary.

Alright, first off, we didn't draft Hamilton. Why does this matter? Because we don't have any prolonged rights for his contract. So, that likely means keeping him would be a one year deal. And Hamilton is young and would probably prefer going year to year, in case he has a good season so he can sign a bigger and/or longer deal. This also means that he's the type of fringe NBAer at the moment who could be available every summer. It also means that if we sign him, he gets a shot and plays well, he'll be looking for that bigger/longer deal in a summer where we should be eyeing bigger prizes with free agent money. So it's difficult to slot him in as a long-term asset.

Also, we have Bruno, Ross and DeMar as young players at the wing developing. All have markedly higher ceilings than Hamilton. However his NBA-readiness compared to Bruno may mean he gets minutes over the latter, slowing the development of a guy who, again, obviously has a higher ceiling than him. Hamilton is 24....He can improve, but it seems pretty obvious we're talking a role-playing wing at best. That type of guy is arguably the easiest asset to find between the draft and free agency every season.

Hamilton does nothing for this team in the short or long-term. And if you like him, he'll probably be a free agent again next summer, so you don't in any way need to sacrifice a valuable roster piece now to get him. *Hansbrough is far from useless, and again, our only insurance in case of injury at PF, where we have two players who historically have shown they're likely to miss at least some games each. Not to mention it's WAY harder, and more important, to find a competent 3rd string big (Hansbrough would be a real backup on a chunk of teams in the league) than a 5th wing.

It's one thing to look long-term....it's another to make pointless moves based on the long-term, and to completely overlook the short term.

People are getting way too excited about Hamilton, a 4th year wing who's shown little-to-no improvement since coming into the league.

Well, there are side effects to going into the tax. First, you lose the non-taxpayer cut of the tax bill, usually about 3-4 M. So you'd be paying Hamilton 1M, paying almost 1M in tax, and losing 3-4M in income. So you'd be paying him effectively 6M, or what Fields makes.

Then you've also started the clock on the repeater tax penalties, meaning that in a couple years when the team is looking to make a push and spend well into the tax, they are suddenly held back by extra harsh taxes kicking in a year earlier because they went into the tax this year.
The repeat tax issue is the reason they won't go there.

I wish NFL would go to only two preseason games and NBA would go to four preseason games. I don't know if people have noticed but season ticket price did not go down despite only two home preseason games. They just increased ticket price of some regular season games to make up the difference.

Part of the preseason is getting rotations down and part is financial.
