I think there always has to be a whipping boy (excuse the expression) around here, for some reason Gary gets a ton of shade around here. He’s a year and half younger than OG, 8 months younger than Flynn, 9 months older than Precious. But somehow he has the least amount ability to get better.. according to many here.

DeRozan wasn’t a good passer his first 4 years in the league (2.5 in the fourth year and under 2.0 the years before) but he’s improved that. Sooo, why do we have a ceiling on a 23 year old? Jaylen Brown at 23 had the same assist numbers. Jimmy Bulter had a big jump in his 3rd year.

GTJ has just as much upside as anyone on this team in my opinion, he is far from a finished product.
siakam is ironically most peoples whipping boy though or even Fred.

Hard to argue with someone who has made up his mind.
      I wouldn't say you're a hater ( yet )
but goodness do you NOT like Gary .

No I don't. I think he improved. I think there are players in the league who I would like better than Gary on both ends of the ball TODAY.

But also I am not overrating him and comparing him to Kobe and Klay lol.

Man I should just do that with all our players now. FVV...hmm is he like CP3 ? Siakam is.. what pippen levels?

"A whipping boy is someone who gets punished for another’s transgressions. It refers to the belief (as Mr Simcox writes, it may have been a myth of Mark Twain’s) that, at least through the 18th century, various European courts had the custom of bringing up a low-class boy along with the crown prince (I don’t know whether it applied to other royal children) as his whipping boy. Child rearing used the then universal practice of whipping or beating a child who did something wrong or even did poorly at lessons, but a prince couldn’t be harmed, so the low class boy would be beaten or whipped to punish the royal child. The theory appears to have been that a royal child was by nature so noble that he would be hurt by seeing his stand-in punished, and so would mend his ways."

I realized that it might not sound the most politically correct, but it actually does have other origins. I meant no ill will when using the term, sorry if I offended.

            • I personally think Gary has a high ceiling... does he have consistency issues? yup. Can he be a better play maker? by a large margin, Can he be a better defender? yes he has room to improve. He improved his D last year, small stride, but better.

He is one of two people on the team that can get to there spot and get separation if they need to... He's actually pretty advanced offensively for the amount of playing time that he's had in the league.

at the very least it should be 3 years with a player option then.. think about Gary... imagine how much more valuable he would be on the market if we had one more year at this rate on his deal. But I agree 4 year with a player option seems to potentially be the new way of the future unless you are supermaxxing...
Well, how much would you have paid Gary to buy that extra year? 5M a year? 10M? I suspect the price was "max me."

good question... but at the time he was a rookie in terms of his contract.... I would of given him a deal that had less incentives and a bit higher.. maybe starting at 17/18... instead of 15/16 to get another year...

Curious why we don't see more front loading

I'm sure the Raptors would have done that deal too! But Gary has to want to sign it! And he was betting he could hit FA again the next time there was real cap space projected (next summer) and get a max.

We don't see more front loading because the cap goes up. Also teams like to offset the risk of a player option with having more of the total salary in that year.

I'm not offended in the least and neither should anyone else who knows how it's intended and I know the origin. It's another guy that likes to call everything racist to stir the pot. I know you used it correctly

yes but it would be a shorter contract for the organization.
