First team I thought of was the Pacers as well, but there's not chance we are getting Mathurin and I don't think Heild would fit long term. Duarte is having a down year after looking like a steal in the draft.
From Portland, Josh Hart is kind of interesting because he does a lot more in terms of assists and rebounding than Trent. He's one of the few guards I've taken note of over the last couple of seasons which maintains a good fg% for a guard. Certainly in comparison to Fred and Gary.
Don't think Jazz would be interested in Trent.
Don't think Eric Gordon fits our timeline.
I'll put Lou Dort's name out there again. Won't replace Trent's shooting but on defense he's a beast.
i'd love dort

The Jazz one is interesting. Helps with depth. Clarkson is similar to Gary except he can be the sixthman without any sort of debate of whether he should be starting or not. Vanderbilt is solid as well.

Despite their winning record Jazz are in the market for FRP's. Not sure you want to unload that for Clarkson.

I don't know what kind of value he would have considering he's an expiring. He could walk in free agency so not many teams will give up a big asset. The best time to trade him would have been last season.
But if we're looking for a trade.. maybe we could move him to the Suns for Crowder and some pieces to make the package work. Maybe something like Crowder, Saric (both expirings) and their FRP for Trent and Flynn.
Crowder isn't playing and Saric is out of their rotation. But we could get a FRP pick back in that deal.
I had to include Flynn since we'd be at 15 guys.. but we could just waive Saric too and keep Flynn.

I wouldn't include any picks there. Trent fits their time-line. If they give him the green light he can probably shoot them out of games to help them tank. They'll need some higher salaried players, and paying that to a 24 year old sounds right for their rebuild.

Trent wants to get paid and Ainge is notoriously stingy (or savvy) with getting guys to sign bargain contracts. So unless it's just for an expiring salary, I don't see the Jazz being interested in Gary. Also, Rich Paul doesn't usually leave much on the table. Probably need to be looking at 3-way trades.

They also need to pay someone to get up to the minimum salary. Luring free agents is when you have to overpay, especially to go to Utah. Trading 2 guys who definitely aren't in their future plans for a 24 year old SG who can score at volume, and then signing him to a long term deal, is a great strategy to keep costs down while building a roster to contend in the future.

Every time any player goes for a steal it's a gamble. It's about knowing when to gamble and how much to commit based on your ability to recover, where the rest of the defense is positioned, who the guy that is going to rotate over for you is covering etc. Takes time to learn all that.
