Assuming he doesn't extend, I think the Lakers will try to sign Myles Turner first. He helps both their offense and their defense, arguably more than Gary. I read somewhere that they'll only have about $35M in cap room.
Thomas Bryant has been very good for them lately. I don't know if they want a C.. especially if AD comes back. They would still want shooters and guard depth. I think we could get one of their future picks for Gary.

PatBev, Walker and a first for Gary should work. Both PatBev and Walker are expiring. Walker is shooting over 38%. But he's got Lebron and Russ getting him clean looks.

Thomas Bryant is a guy I've suggested acquiring for the last 3 off-seasons. He's another Rico Hines guy. Lakers are only paying him $1.8M. WTF. I think we tried and he rejected us. Thanks, Khem.

Well Bryant got hurt (I think it was an ACL). And then he had a lackluster come back with Washington. He then was a free agent, and went to the Lakers for the minimum. We had interest but if I had to guess we offered the minimum too. And once he said no, we went after Hernangomez instead.

I don't think we were giving him part of the MLE like we did to Porter. In hindsight it was a bad call since Porter can't play. But at the time I would have preferred Porter.

Bryant is a free agent and the Lakers won't have his bird rights. So we could take another stab in the offseason. But for this season he's stepped up. I don't think they'd want to give up a lot of assets for Turner unless they want to blow that cap space on him in the summer.

        • Wonder if Lakers would dangle one of their picks for GTJ. I would take PBev+JTA and one of their future firsts for him.

Do they need his bird rights? They have plenty of cap space to sign him for say 10m/yr

No they don't. And they could bring him back using that cap space like you suggested. Good point.

I have this feeling that they will use that cap space on someone like Kyrie though. And that will use up all their space.

                • What's so shocking about that? Trent is going to get traded.

                    • We're running it back, minus Gary...... so we can pay Fred. Was there ever any doubt?

                      Toronto Raptors' trade market evaluation

According to Marc Stein, the Raptors aren’t motivated to trade their top players unless they get strong offers. He cites Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, in particular, as players that would be tough for other teams to pry away. The insane trade market for star players last offseason has likely raised the bar for the types of returns the Raptors would demand for these players.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable for them to demand a haul of unprotected first-round picks similar to the pricetags of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell for Siakam. There are a handful of teams with a surplus of first-round picks positioned to make that type of deal. Anunoby won’t go for that type of haul, but he should have a strong market with two first-round picks feeling like a fair price point. He can be plugged into every other team in the league and instantly raise their ceiling.

Stein adds that the Raptors are open to parting ways with Gary Trent Jr., which other executives previously suggested to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto at the G League Showcase in Las Vegas. As explained in the story several weeks ago, Trent Jr. seems like their most likely trade candidate because he has a player option that he’s expected to decline this offseason. Instead of giving him a raise, the Raptors could trade him for draft compensation and to clean up their books so they’ll have more flexibility to give Fred VanVleet a raise this offseason along with Siakam and Anunoby next offseason.

Many teams in the league can trade for Trent Jr. as a rental. The question is whether teams are willing to give up a premium for him and potentially pay him $20-plus million annually on his next deal. Teams projected to be over the cap this summer who could use backcourt help, like the Suns, Mavericks, and Wizards, could fit the criteria.

                      • If they just trade Trent and give a raise to Fred, this team is facked.
Is there no path to actually improve, what a mess.

                        • Maybe we could trade Gary for Norm and then try to get Rodney Hood back (is he still playing?)

First off, we don't know what they are going to do with Trent and if it will be Trent alone that they trade or maybe as part of a bigger package.

There will be plenty of paths to improve, but they won't happen on the timeline we would like. More likely based on Scottie's development curve.

I'm hoping Masai proves me wrong but I just foresee a lot of status quo happening. Maybe he moves Trent in an under whelmng way but I think they move forward with just about the status quo. I think the team needs more of a shakeup then he/Bobby have the stomach for.

If it's all about waiting for Scotty, they need even more of a retool. Move Fred AND Gary. Young players and picks, let's go.

Funny thing about your post is that Fred is a better player than Trent(this is not a debate). But sounds like you'd rather trade Fred and give Trent a raise. Lol. How is that going to improve the team?
