Yeah, we're on a torrid pace of 1 win in the last 5 games and 2 in the last 7. Nothing can slow these guys down!
In our toughest stretch of the season. Several of those games were essentially coin tosses that could have gone either way when they should likely have been blown out on talent disparity alone. The point is, if it was a foolproof approach we'd have been losing games with ease - instead it's been pretty nail-bitey for those hoping for losses. Thankfully for their pick, it has worked out thus far. Scraped by against a hot Washington team last night too in a game they clearly again could have won in spite of resting guys.

It's actually pretty impressive the fine line they are walking resting juuuust enough guys to squeak out these losses almost every game.

Re-visiting this, since the Indy game is the final game, and either team can win the tiebreaker, there are actually a range of outcomes where that final game essentially becomes the 11 vs 10 play-in game, where the winner gets the 10 seed. We'll ignore Washington and Chicago for now and assume Washington gets in and Chicago doesn't.

I'll remove the Indy vs Raps game (so Indy has 6 games leading up to it and we have 5) and put it this way.

If, leading up to that final game:
Indy goes 0-6, Raps go 2-3 or 3-2
Indy goes 1-5, Raps go 3-2 or 4-1
Indy goes 2-4, Raps go 4-1 or 5-0
Indy goes 3-3, Raps go 5-0

... if any of those, the winner of the final game gets in.
OK, update to this. And I'll do Washington too. Might as well keep track of the drop dead records to grab that lotto slot the Raps seem to want quite badly (Lowry resting again last night was pretty egregious).

For Indy, looking at leading up to the final game of the season, if:

Indy goes 0-5, Raps go 3-1 or 4-0
Indy goes 1-4, Raps go 4-0

That game determines the 10th spot. No longer a window for Raps cleanly winning the 10 spot from Indy before then.

For Washington, looking at all the remaining games, if:

WAS goes 0-5, Raps go 5-0

Raps get in. Any other scenario they are out, as Washington has the tie break.

Technically, Raps have the tie break on Charlotte, so if:

CHO goes 0-6, Raps go 5-0

      Raps also get in.

So. Long story short, if the Raps lose one more game, they are down to a single mathematical scenario to make the play-in which requires a complete collapse from Indy. The combined wins from Indy and Washington and the Raps losing last night really changed the math dramatically.

      • Looking at it from the other direction (7th slot here we come):

We can technically "catch" all but four teams. Obviously some of those are exceedingly unlikely, on the order of their play-in chances at this point (probably longer shots actually).

The Raps have 40 losses and can get to 45 losses if all goes well (or poorly, whatever).

To tie Orlando and/or Cleveland at 45 losses and a three way tie for 5th (or two way tie for 6th if one of the two teams doesn't do what is needed):

ORL and CLE go 6-0, Raps go 0-5.

        Obviously unlikely there.

So, focusing in the 7th slot (which they are currently in, and just need to hold off the other yucky teams around them)...

If we assume Washington and Indy are out of the picture (as their situations are addressed above), then they have to hold off SAC, CHI and NOP. Chicago is right there with 39 losses (1 behind the Raps) with 6 games to play. But don't own their own draft pick, so will be going all out to win (not that it has helped them so far). Sacramento has 37 losses with 6 games to play, and NOP have 36 with 6 games to play.

So going from easiest to hardest fight, if:

NOP go 0-6, Raps need to go 3-2 to share the slot, 2-3 to fend them off.
NOP go 1-5, Raps need to go 4-1 to share the slot, 3-2 to fend them off.
NOP go 2-4, Raps need to go 4-1 to fend them off (at least sharing the spot is guaranteed).
NOP go 3-3, can't catch the Raps.

SAC go 0-6, Raps need to go 2-3 to share the slot, 1-4 to fend them off.
SAC go 1-5, Raps need to go 3-2 to share the slot, 2-3 to fend them off.
SAC go 2-4, Raps need to go 4-1 to share the slot, 3-2 to fend them off.
SAC go 3-3, Raps need to go 4-1 to fend them off (at least sharing the spot is guaranteed).
SAC go 4-2, can't catch the Raps.

CHI go 0-6, Raps need to go 0-5 to share the slot.
CHI go 1-5, Raps need to go 1-4 to share the slot, 0-5 to fend them off.
CHI go 2-4, Raps need to go 2-3 to share the slot, 1-4 to fend them off.
CHI go 3-3, Raps need to go 3-2 to share the slot, 2-3 to fend them off.
CHI go 4-2, Raps need to go 4-1 to share the slot, 3-2 to fend them off.
CHI go 5-1, Raps need to go 4-1 to fend them off (at least sharing the spot is guaranteed).
CHI go 6-0, can't catch the Raps.

            • chicago has no desire to lose as DanH pointed out. They need to try their best to crank that draft pick as high as possible.

At this point it's basically done. They needed Indy to lose to Atlanta and to win last night for there to be a real window, or at least one of the two to keep that window open a crack.

                  • The Magic Number is the combination of Raps losses and the herds wins that would drop the Raps below that team.
If the Pacers win one more game and the Raps lose one more... We will finish below them,
Looks like chalk for Pacers / Whiz and Pellys.

The Kings are interesting but they get OKC twice.

Its us and the Bulls for 7th.

Mega Bowl. Raps visit the Windy City May 13th. With a loss to the Bulls we eat 2 games from the magic number of 5. .
And planetmars or @theclawreborn will wrestle Dewy the Bear at half time.

Nurse, who is in his third season as the Toronto Raptors’ head coach, responded with disgust. He told reporters that the information shared about Bjorkgren was “100 percent false” and a “bold-faced lie.”

And yes... the Bulls have sent their FRP to the Magic in the Vooch trade... Its protected 1 to 4. ... And the Bulls are not going to finish last to 4th last.
