Based on their talk after the trade, my guess is the discussion around a pick was going to be based on if Dragic demanded a buyout. If they had to buy him out, they wanted compensation. But when they reached out (after exploring trades and finding insufficient value for him) and he was open to playing out the year (and therefore being around at the deadline when they can try again for value) they were fine to take the deal as is.

The 2nds were going to be ornamental, I'm not too upset we didn't get one, I was hoping for a first but that was a long shot. My main disappointment is not getting Okpala too, but clearly the Heat asked Lowry to take less to avoid sending him (Lowry actually took less than needed for even that, so they probably were trying to fit all the pieces in and asked for his help).

The good news is the front office does seem head over heels for Precious, which is a great sign for how good he can be.

What I mean about the 2nds is this: they could only offer two of them. A 2022 2nd, but the worse of Denver and Philly, so likely in the high 50's. The sort of pick you can buy dirt cheap on draft night if you so choose. And their 2028 2nd, which, I mean, great, but that's not helping this iteration of the team or probably the next one..
