If we want to maximize this core at any point in the next few years, this summer is our chance to use cap space. After this it's all MLEs.
I think this argument is moot though because Miami isn't gonna include a 1st.

Still a big time hard no. Who do we realistically get in free agency? Allen is getting kept by Cleveland. Holmes signs somewhere else. Maybe we could get Ball but likely he goes to Knicks or something. We'd be giving away a 1st for cap space to sign no one or severely overpay someone. Rather keep Dragic in that case.

And if the Raptors let this free agency window go by (and there might be a good reason to do so, though a pick in 2025 that would certainly be protected would not likely qualify), it will likely not open again until the core is coming off their contracts.

I don't see why Holmes would automatically not sign here. I don't see why Ball wouldn't either. Allen will be kept by Cleveland unless he is overpaid, in which case they might think twice - do they want a 20M C? Same goes for Collins in ATL (though we'd need to clear more like 25M for a scary offer).
Yes, you might end up with an overpaid player on your team. Only thing worse than that is sitting and watching all the remotely good players go get overpaid by some other teams while we do nothing to increase the talent base of our team.

But you never know what could happen with the right coaching in the right system and if we can't end up with Allen or Holmes we at least need something. For future trades at the very least.

Sorry but I don't need another Turkoglu or Demarre Carroll. We only ever get mediocre players for way over fair asking price and they become dead weight contracts no one wants. Keep Dragic if we have to give up a 1st to unload him. Rosters change constantly in the NBA and I'd rather a year of Dragic than a 3-4 year overpay for a mediocre player. He will likely be a nice trade deadline asset for a team making a push, and we'd be fine taking back a 2nd for him, we won't need a nice return like we do for Lowry.

Thats why I think dallas needs to be the third team as they need dragic and have cap space. So we can get a pick/assets from them

A big worry of mine is that if we don't re sign Lowry we will be in the mediocre treadmill team territory. Like Orlando. Not bad enough for a good draft pick but not good enough to make the playoffs or just sneak in as first round fodder. I don't think Masai will put up with that though.

Aim for good players, sign good players, and the worst you'll have is an overpaid good player. So long as the player is good, the contract won't be too bad.
The point is the long term planning. Let's say you keep Dragic, you sell him at the deadline for another expiring contract and a 2nd rounder. Next summer, how are you improving the team?

Yeah, I've been proposing Achiuwa, Okpala and their 2025 1st. Along with Dragic. And then ideally you re-route the 1st and Dragic to a team like OKC so you can go play in the cap space pool this summer.
