You don't get cap space on a buyout unless you use an amnesty. I'm suggesting we hold on to his $19M in our books, but negotiate a buy out where he gives the Raptors some cash back.. Somewhere around 8-10 million.
I don't want this to happen. I just think this is where this is heading. Just a gut feeling like I said earlier.
We all wanted Suggs.. got Barnes.
We all wanted some action in free agency and got Sam Dekker and that Egyptian center.
We all wanted Trent to come back at around $15M.. his AAV is $18M.
We all wanted some action on Lowry.. and so far only have Achiuawa.
The good news is if he hands back $8-10M, that money comes off the cap too. The question will be whether he gives back nearly that much. That's a scenario where a buyout could make some sense (though I'd still prefer we keep him and peddle him at the deadline), but it's rare for a player to give back that much.

I feel we'll end up with some extra meh stuff from Miami (like Okpala and a 2nd, neither of which moving the needle much), and keep Dragic.
The problem with keeping Dragic is similar to the "problem' in keeping Kyle: they're both old "win-now" PGs ready to help a team near contention, but won't help a rebuilding young team (on the contrary, may take development minutes away). The difference is Kyle is the perfect culture fit and could mentor the youth, while Dragic is the opposite.
I hope they're focusing their efforts on another team other than Dallas (like the Pels or even the Bulls), to be the 3rd team (or the 4th) to facilitate this unload. Maybe they could use Boucher in the mix to help untangle this hair-ball. I like him as a player I would actually rather keep him (he's a good backup 4 or 5), but if he could be offered to the 3rd or 4th team as sweetener to facilitate things and get us a tangible return, I would.

I think you mean unless you use the stretch provision, amnesties don't exist anymore. Which they should probably not be considering. Even then, the cap space would be around MLE level, slightly higher. I guess cutting/trading Boucher could get us to a more significant number.

$8M from us.. $8M from Dallas, and Dragic gives back $3M. Something like that.

Okay I didn't know a buyout would reduce the amount in a team's cap space as well. Just thought cash would exchange hands. So this is good. Yeah I think I read somewhere that Dallas can offer him around $8M.. so I suspect a large portion of his $19M will be bought out so that he can get that from Dallas.

I'm curious what the Birch contract will be. Report was "long term" which would imply three years, but if it's only two years it could fit into the room MLE. If it's three years though it comes out of that cap room.

That would clear us to be able to have about $9M in cap room, up to $15M if we get rid of Boucher's salary.

Spurs just trading the last of their vets in DeRozan and Mills, so they can finally embark on a long overdue rebuild. The only thing slower than Raptors free agency is the Spurs hitting the reset button. I kind of feel for their fans who've probably been clamoring for this since shortly after Timmy retired.
The reality is that the Spurs front office hasn't made a great roster move (draft pick, FA signing or trade) since they traded George Hill for Kawhi a decade ago.

I still think boucher is gone from the raptors.. we don't want to get be paying him if we aren't committed to salaries for 4 years

These were the odds from a couple of days ago:
And we recently finished negotiating with Klutch via Trent Jr's extension. So this could have some legs. Not that I care about Ben in a Raptor uniform. But interesting to me nonetheless.
