I cant see a trade that makes sense for us. Philly must be hoping portland or GSW become desperate enough to give up a lot, We dont have to be desperate. Now we dont even have the Lowry card to play.
I think Ben and Philly are moving towards a divorce. And I really do think the Raptors have interest. But Morey might be asking for too much, and Masai doesn't lose a trade. So that will probably end in a stalemate.

With respect to Simmons, I just don't think Masai will blink before Neil Olshey does. It's that simple. MLSE is wining and dining Masai to bring him back on a new deal and Olshey needs to save his job by turning the Blazers into a contender.
What I do see happening though is Lillard will come back home from playing in Tokyo and finally ask to be traded. And that's probably what Morey is waiting on.

These were the odds from a couple of days ago:
And we recently finished negotiating with Klutch via Trent Jr's extension. So this could have some legs. Not that I care about Ben in a Raptor uniform. But interesting to me nonetheless.

Midnight tonight is when the moratorium officially ends.
But for the Kyle sign and trade, rumours were that they were going to look for a 3rd team for Dragic by sometime today (Thursday), and if they couldn't find a taker, the Raptors would keep Dragic and also get some additional compensation from the Heat (such as Okpala and/or another 2nd rounder).
I suspect if we end up keeping Dragic, we'll buy him out and not keep him. I just have a strange feeling this is the way this plays out.Last edited by Primer; Thu Aug 5, 2021, 11:49 AM.

There is zero reason to buy Dragic out. None. Zip. Nada. Makes no fucking sense at all. Gives us no cap space, no advantage, just a huge waste of money. You keep him and play him because he's still a good vet guard and he will have trade value at the deadline, even if it's just to get a 2nd round pick. He's also the perfect large salary contract to bring back a player that moves the needle. Without one of those you have to send out guys you actually wanna keep.

Agreed. Only nuance is that trading him at the deadline will require taking on salaries, so it isn't quite as simple as at least get a second round pick....
The whole idea we need to do Dragic a favor is ridiculous, we don't owe Dragic shit. Similarly, the idea that he'd be a bad influence on our young guards is nonsense. He's by all account a great teammate and has had a very long and successful NBA career, he'd be a great player for our young guys to learn from. Not to mention maybe we overachieve this year and Dragic becomes an extremely important piece in our playoff run. He's been pretty damn good in the playoffs the past 2 seasons.

If we had cap space we'd use most of it on Birch. If we operate above the cap we'd use our MLE on him. I don't think there is a free agent out there that we have to make a play on. Markkanen is the big name everyone mentions.. but he doesn't feel like a Raptor type of player. And I doubt we have interest in guys like Schroeder or Hart. Who else is left?
Keeping him until the deadline won't matter. No team is going to trade for a $19M expiring contract that is 35 years old. Not one where they would have to give back a core piece to make it work (unless a team is trying to duck the tax). And if he remains on the roster, he's taking minutes away from Flynn and Trent. Two guys we kind of want to develop.
Personally I would love for them to either keep him or make a good trade for him. It's basically been 3 days now since free agency started.. and we are still holding on to Dragic's contract. It doesn't look good from where I'm sitting.

Our guard rotation is not exactly deep at the moment. Whether you plan on tanking or competing you still need to fill out the roster and you could do *much* worse than a quality veteran like Dragic, whom I have no doubt will be a good locker room presence.
One or more of FVV, GTJ and Malachi are going to miss games due to injury. Banton and Johnson are likely going to spend much of their season at 905. It's either going to be Dragic or some other unexciting established guard, but there almost certainly will be another guard for the rotation before all is said and done.
Obviously if the right trade arises that makes you better and younger you take it, but I don't see why you ever buy him out.

Sure, we only deal him then if it's to our advantage. Presumably to bring back some young players we like or the other teams expirings that are lesser players than Dragic so they have to toss in picks.

Dragic was also a huuuge part of the Heat's run to the Finals in the bubble. But he was injured much of last year, which is often an issue for him. Age is obviously a factor, but when healthy, he's about as good as it gets as a veteran, backup combo guard & spot starter.
