  • How Can You Focus When You Have No Idea What You Are Doing?

    Look at this play:
    http://raptorsrepublic.com/2010/03/2...gnani-or-bosh/

You have to be shite-ing me, this motherloving bullplop happens on almost every play. We look like a bunch of chickens with our heads cut off. Nobody has any idea what they need to be doing on any given play. There is no consistency, there is no progress, there is no fudging defence being played of any kind!

The way I see it, is that Triano is a strong "teaching" coach. He knows his X's and O's and shows them on paper. Beyond that, he can't actually train these guys to have higher IQ on defence, and in some cases, I have actually seen players REGRESS as the season when on defensively. Iavaroni is a fudgenut of a strategist. This stupid chickenlover comes up with a "switch every single frickin play no matter how soft." Then, when it is shown how stupid that is, he fudging comes up with some hedging sometimes bullship that confuses the players half the time, and Triano has no idea how to right this boat. They have no system, and they haven't taught players how to communicate. This is NOT all on the coaches - the players are responsible too.

Is there no energy? No there is not. But when you can't communicate on a single goshdarn defensive stop long enough to both force a bad shot, AND box the fudge out on the rebounds, then of course you will lose energy and focus. You get a stop, and 'oh sheet' Serge Ibaka slams home the rebound. Or Earl Boykins is grabbing offensive rebounds. Or you fail altogether to cover players on the floor, or you give up three after three after three. When players have a career night shooting threes it is because they are left open. Turning Portland into a fastbreaking team is absofudginglutely terrible. We have atrocious transition defence. Watching opposing teams get whatever they want on offence is demoralizing, and makes the team lose focus and energy.

The Raps cannot friggin defend anyone. This is has nothing to do with these buzz words "energy/focus/not giving up", and everything to do with the fact that nobody, not the coaches, the players or the GM have any clue what to do, how to play, where to stand, how to take a piss for gosh sakes. How can you focus when you have no clue what you are doing?

If I hear lack of focus or energy one more time, I am contemplating not watching this team for the rest of the year. I changed all my swearwords when I finished writing. I was worried it might get screened by some people's filters - feel free to read those words in -- I meant every one. Sorry for the rant.

Anyone else fed up as I am?

They have no idea defensively, We know it, Triano knows it, Bryan Colangelo knows it, even the players know it and for the life of me I can't see how they haven't changed their defensive strategy to fix it.

When we had that easy stretch it would have been a good time to work out the kinks and get ready for a post all star push like the Bucks have, instead we are regressing badly. Maybe we just aren't a good team ?????

I couldn't agree with you more verbatim. It's actually sickening to look at our guys on defense and watch an open man hit a three with nobody closing out to him. If our guys had any clue what our "system" was then that wouldn't happen as often. Instead, we let the 'defensive specialist' Marc Iavaroni try and come up with some revolutionary scheme that will blow everyone's mind, but it turns out to be the most confusing, ridiculous, embarrassing attempt at basketball defense ever created. Our guys are obviously frustrated playing it, and it shows. I actually signed up to the forum to agree with you I felt to strongly about it, great post.

Yeah. I am completely through with this year's version of the team. I don't watch them anymore. I'm too old, and my nerves can't take it.

It's all Colangelo's fault in the end. I know hindsight is 20/20 but when you have the respect that Colangelo does you'd expect some sort of ingenuity, foresight and common sense when building a team. Instead it's been 1 disaster after another. I tried to remain optimistic but I knew we were beyond screwed from a defensive stand-point when Iavoroni was brought in to be the defensive specialist. That s*** makes about as much sense as bringing in Iverson to provide veteran leadership. Every time I see Iavaroni I can't help but think of Gil from The Simpsons.

Then after Marc was brought in to build a defensive system we sign some old white guy who can't do much to a ridiculous contract that we're gonna be stuck with for at least the next 3 years.

If Colangelo's purpose coming to Toronto was to sabotage the franchise for the next 3-5 years then he definitely succeeded. Pissed away a handful of picks, signed worthless players to ludicrous contracts and created an atmosphere that would scare away the most dedicated superstar.

Guys, in all fairness we can't come down on Colangelo without calling ourselves idiots because the majority of Raptors fans were ready to schedule a parade leading into training camp. Colangelo has assembled a very talented, very flawed team. It's not perfect but its been winning as many as it's lost and is in eigth seed. The team is on pace to win ten more games than last season. It's underachieved in my mind and that's to blame on the coaches and the players. This is not all on Colangelo but he deserves his share of the blame. I think Colangelo comes into play again this off-season with the Bosh saga and trying to figure out how to move this team forward. I seriously don't know how he could have improved the team much more than he did in the off-season working with what he had. Hedo was a mistake but if he didn't pull that S&T it was either give that money to Marion or do nothing. He couldn't afford to do nothing with this being Bosh's contract year. It was tough circumstances and I don't think their was a right answer. It was too bad the course he took may be the most damaging long term.

are you serious??? I knew we were f***ed before training camp even started. I even told my buddy after the Cleveland game that that will be the highlight of our season. So far it's proven true. I guess ya'll are idiots then

As for the rest of your post: I agree that the off-season was a tricky situation. His hand was forced because this is Bosh's contract year. However, I still believe that no move is better than forcing an unnecessary move. That, dishing out the money that he did for Hedo was ridiculous. If *I* was GM and I was giving that kind of money to the guy he would definitely be barred from playing overseas or else I void his contract. If there's a chance that my star player is leaving next year, the rest of the team better damn well be ready to play.

I would've also hired somebody a lot more competent to work on the defense. Heck...leading up to the end of last season there's been a lot of talk about Ettore Messina being brought in. I'd wager all my savings that he'd be a lot more competent at defense than Iavaroni. I'd say 70% of this is on Colangelo's shoulders. The team is where it is because that's how he assembled them. Winning 10 more games or w/e compared to last year isn't any sort of accomplishment.

Guess so. Congrats on calling it. I hope to turned it into some money. Based on what I seen on multiple big boards the feeling overall was overly positive. I thought the team would have a slow start but I honestly thought that right here in now the team chemistry would be coming together, not falling apart. You can't blame the GM for the players not being willing to play as a team. These guys have played ball all their lives, they should know how to play united by now and overcome differences. You wouldn't know it by looking at them. I blame the GM for holes in the roster, I don't blame him for the psychology at work. That's on the coaches and the players and absolutely no one, I don't care what you say, could have called this team having zero chemistry or desire at this point in the game. Not even a professional psychologist could have called that back in training camp. Maybe one could help fix some issues in the locker and on the court at this point though.

Beyond Hedo, no move would have meant no Antoine Wright, no Jarret Jack and no Rasho Nesterovic; that's no MLE or BAE.

You're right. That move was a perfect example of a double-edged sword at work. At the same time it wasn't even Colangelo who came up with the idea of doing a sign-and-trade. It was some guy in front office. Colangelo was ready to just give $53 million straight up to Turk.

Now if we could only get rid of a combination of Hedo, Bargs and Calderon (not necessarily all 3 but 2 out of 3) for some solid defensive role players then we're set. Of course I'm dreaming. I know there's some stupid GM's out there but I don't think anyone is stupid enough to give up a solid piece for any of those guys (especially Hedo. Bargs and Caldy may have some pull, but I wouldn't expect any major pieces coming in).
