It is true that the mentality is very different in hockey vs NBA, hockey is still a 'go to war' mentality and NBA players are now preserving themselves for long-term careers.
It's the culture of the sport and the training/experience as well. In sports like football and hockey, players are hurt all the time. Players are trained to get hit, get hurt, and carry on. My buddy who played in the NHL used to say that pretty much everyone on every team was hurt all season. Players learn to play with pain, so even when they get injured, they are better able to play through it. How can Drew Brees play QB with a torn rotator cuff and busted up ribs and Davis can't play with a minor groin strain? Cause Brees' body/mind has been conditioned to play through pain and Davis' hasn't.

At the pro level, I also think the nature of the game is important. In hockey and football, there are very, very few players that are irreplaceable, so guys don't want to sit out cause they might diminish, or even lose, their livelihood, whereas in the NBA, it can very hard to replace even rotation players on teams and most rosters are really only 6-7 men deep when the chips are down. And that's even more pronounced when it comes to the superstars. where it's not only the player but the organization needing to protect that guy at all costs.

      • Yeah I worded it poorly , shouldn't say MOST players are soft as hell, but a lot are. And Davis is the poster boy. Who the hell misses a game 5 with a mild strain? In beer league softball they drink 1 more beer to ease the symptoms before the next inning

        • Boston likely to bow out tonight.
Is this the last game in Chowderville for Brad Stevens ?

It will be because of illness.
Stevens is sick of Boston and they are sick of him.

This is one of those instances where the GM should go before the coach. Ainge has had so many opportunities to convert that fabled treasure trove of assets into a championship squad but he refused to pull the trigger on trades time and time again. He overvalued his picks and young players and what should have been a long championship window looks like it's may already have closed.

Or they aren't being upfront with how bad the injury is maybe?

I dont think Celtics would be the one to say goodbye. He is a pretty good coach. I think with brad he stays for a couple more season then leaves on his own to a monster offer to run an iconic college program. Lots of rumor he would go take over his hometown Indiana but they just hired mike woodson

Edit: I do like that you generally have more Fred Van Vleet's in hockey - spit out the broken tooth and put me in coach. No one's a fan of the acting, flopping, and fake drama in basketball. Let's not be soccer.
That's well on the way to being too late.

Whole generations of players are taught to automatically scream on layups like they were shot or yell out "and one" or else flop like a fish if anyone comes near you to generate fake fouls that the NBA is so in love with. lebron already has mastered the soccer-inspired grabbing of the ankle or knee to the point where it causes him to see three rims and he's only so happy to tell you about it...over and over.

The only thing maybe in defense of soccer and basketball is that you aren't wearing gladiator-like PPE equipment like in hockey and football. That said... taking a full-speed hit in hockey is like nothing else, even with equipment.

                            • The Lakers are gonna be just fine. I sprinkled some money on the Clippers to win their series after the Mavs won Game 2(looking pretty good now). I think i'll do the same in this series.

                              Lakers in 7.
