      1000%
The severity of his wrist injury really paints how you see the rest of the season going. Fred and Pascal don’t need more “playoff experience”. OG a little less so. If Scottie’s not going to be part of the run to get there or be close to full health when we’re there, it makes the lottery look a bit better.

There’s no compelling narrative for this season.

Last season, it was Scottie and life after Lowry.

Tampa was depressing, but still interesting, as well as potentially trading Lowry.

Season before was the heart of champion, trying valiantly to repeat without Kawhi.

Season before was Kawhi and the chip obviously.

Season before was finally thinking we could beat Lebron, but getting Lebronto’ed in the worst possible and most humiliating way.

Main narrative for this season should’ve been player development with Scottie and Precious taking a big leap, but instead it was potentially blowing it up at the trade deadline (which was a compelling storyline.)

But mostly this season’s been: how much are we gonna pay guys, running back this middling team over the next few years, which doesn’t really excite me as a fan.

        • I personally argued last season to fast track the development of Scottie even on season 1 in terms of his attempts and designed plays solely fo him like PnR/ PnP and Post-ups.

With VanVleet who is always on the court almost 80% of the 48 minutes, Scottie becomes an afterthought on offense….either he becomes the spot up shooter in the corner or on the top of the key which to me is totally shying away from his strengths or he becomes the garbage collector to missed Hail Marys.

Last year, his usage was 19.0% and 12.6 Field goal Attempts
This year, his usage is 20.4% and 13.3 FGA

          what the f@ck?

now people are still arguing the best value that we can offer VanVleet for another 4 f@cking years and on the flip side, saying to observe patience on Scottie’s development for another almost half a decade.

Agreed...just imagine 4 more years of FV.
I think if raptors organization decide 2 keep FV, Barnes is gonna ask for Trade...don't b surprised, I'm just giving u heads up..

Scottie has played in 11 games where Fred didn't play this year.

              He's put up a 19% usage rate (lower than when Fred plays), a 46% TS%, a 20% AST% and a 15% TOV% - good for an absolutely terrible 1.3:1 AST:TOV ratio, an individual ORTG of 98...

Yeah, great way to develop a player, putting him in situations where THAT's the outcome. Kinda seems like the perfect way to sabotage the confidence of your young player - and the biggest thing I want to see improve from Scottie is his confidence and aggression.

              • Still don't see why people think Fred is getting in the way of Scottie. It's clearly Pascal if anyone. Pascal carries the highest usage, and plays the exact same position as Scottie. Fred is willing to play off ball - and can be good at it. Pascal is terrible off ball unless he's sitting in the corners like he was when Kawhi was here.

I mean sure, but I did a similar exercise to the above with Pascal and Scottie earlier in the year and although Scottie wasn't way worse like he is away from Fred, he actually didn't see any significant improvement away from Pascal either.

All of it is completely overblown.

Also I think your recollection is faulty if you think Pascal's offensive role when Kawhi was here was "sit in the corners."

Exaggerating for sure.. but Pascal had a sub 21% usage next to Kawhi. And he had 4 shooters around him. Will Pascal take a back seat to Scottie if we want Scottie's usage to get to the mid 20's like he did with Kawhi when he was younger?

Pascal isn't a great #1 option. And I don't think his ego and max contract will allow him to be a #2 option, at least not when the #1 option is the younger Scottie Barnes.

We think Pascal has that big of an ego now?

We do need to stop pampering Scottie. If he wants to be the #1 option, its up to him to show it, especially when you have an All-NBA caliber player ahead of you. If he does show it, Pascal and Fred will be fine with it I'm sure.

I'd like to see Scottie takes Fred's 23.1% usage and he'd be fine as the #2 option behind Pascal. He's not ready to be a #1 option until he can consistently hit 3s or dominate in the post.

I don't buy the myth that Fred is fine with being off ball. He said over and over again in the media his game was suffering this year because we asked him to play off ball. That's not something you'd say if you were fine with it. You'd take responsibility for your own shitty play and not blame being off ball.

Scottie does not have to have a high USG.
He just needed to become the lead distributor and for Nick to tailor the offense around him.

I think that's a fair take. That would also require no Fred.

                              • i'm not ready to say definitively what scottie can or can't be. he's shown flashes of being able to take over either as a scoring option or primary playmaker. all i know is he needs the ball more to develop for any of us or the organization to be able to say.

i have said ad nauseum that i think fred is a better pairing on paper than pascal, because he's able to play off-ball and provide secondary playmaking duties. however, since the jak trade fred has dominated the shit out of the ball and it's left both pascal and scottie as bystanders at times. this is not a criticism of either fred or jak as it's been super effective (see zack lowe's then things today), but i don't it bodes well for scottie's development.

either way i agree with the conclusion of lowe's blurb:

Being a plucky first-round team isn't good enough for the Raptors' front office. Tough decisions loom this summer.
