This is the type of defense we were expecting to see from Barnes, that was hyped, pre-draft:

Scottie defends well in the post or near it.

Scottie doesn't defend well when he's chasing guards 30 ft. away from the basket.

    Who would have thunk it?

Haven't watched enough games yet to draw conclusions but it looks to me like the pressure defense is still there but switching has been reduced. Yes/no?

Will need to get 15-20 games under the belt. It's always hard to know in preseason what exactly teams are showing and not showing.

But everything (doubling, pressure, switching, helping) looks much more measured and there appears to be more floor balance (guys aren't wildly out of position after a single pass or drive).

Teams eventually figured out how to easily manipulate our defense and turn the our over-aggression against us. But for 3 seasons Nurse was stubborn to make adjustments to (or even scrap) the genius system that won him coach of the year.

          • Is a classic Raptors-fan push to the allstar game out of the question?

            • If Scottie and Pascal are hitting 3s then the pairing works amazing. Fingers crossed they both keep it up. We will be tough to beat.

              • Pascal and Scottie as a duo can be as good as Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum if things break right. They can fit better together too based on Scottie being primary creator for Pascal as the primary finisher. There isn’t as logical a hierarchy in Boston.

There's a big difference though, and that's the ability to shoot...and not just shoot, but shoot off the dribble. Not a skill that either Scottie and Pascal have in spades. All the big duos like Tatum/Brown, Kawhi/George or KD/Booker have that. Going to be interesting to see what the counter will be when defenses start walling off the paint.

Both Tatum and Brown struggle off the dribble at times, and they both have had their fair share of trouble at the rim as well. Put three shooters around both duos and I think ours does more. Of corse, that’s just a stupid hypothetical.

                    • I'm hoping we stagger Pascal and Scottie subs so Scottie gets a stretch in each half where he plays Pascal role of primary ball handler/working in the mid range etc. Then we will really get a chance to see if they are overlapping and won't fit. If Scottie looks like he can do what Pascal does then trading him at the deadline becomes easier.

It will take time for both to develop some synergy compared to the other standout duos in the league presently. What is unfortunate is that, this season is Pascal’s contract year, there is so much uncertainty of his tenure as a Raptor. Hopefully it is not too little too late especially with a new coach who promotes ball movement. I am still excited of the possibility that they are more than capable to compete amongst the best in the league. They have done it last year in a couple of games and this preseason games.

It is quite regrettable that last year on Scottie’s sophomore year and a healthy Pascal would have been ideal if they started the season as the 1A and 1B of the team. The former guy who is now a Rocket should have come off the bench or could have just played off ball just like what his coach envisioned right before the season started.

the collateral damage at the expense of development and chemistry

                        • Scottie looking really good. Hope his ankle is ok. He can really elevate this team if he continues to be aggressive and show improvement on that jumper. Looking forward to his development this season.

It was a sprained foot not ankle. I think that will heal quicker, but I'm no doctor.

Yeah Scottie's shot looks better. And he's easily been more aggressive. When he's going downhill he's tough to handle.

Well whatever it is exactly hopefully it doesnt prevent him from playing and developing. Really excited to see how he plays this season as a focal point.
