We are over half way through Scottie’s 3rd year. He started out shooting the ball really well and looked like he was having a breakout year.

Lately though, his shooting has fallen off and he seems to disappear for stretches. Is this just a bump in the road? Growing pains of a new group
if teammates? Is Scottie the guy to build around, or a key piece to build with?
Scottie's been struggling lately for sure. New players to get accustomed to, injuries to 3/5 of the starters, defenses focusing on him, and a lack of aggressiveness are all contributing to those struggles. He's also being expected to score like VC, when he's probably more of a Jason Kidd. I know many here felt and still feel that we need a dynamic scorer next to Scottie.

Scottie was labelled a "zero level scorer" coming out of college and has developed his offense phenomenally. I don't know how the expectation has become "score like VC". That's a completely different type of player archetype.

      • Its a growing stage for him. He is the main focus of defenses, double teams/helps are going to him. He'll learn to figure it out. When his 3 point shot was falling, it was mainly off catch and shoots when the defense was focused on Pascal and he got into a rhythm.

Yup. I still don't expect him to be a 25-30 PPG scorer that can get into his bag. He can be the most important player on the team, but I'm not expecting him to lead the team in scoring every night. They'll have to find that guy. Maybe its IQ, but thats TBD.

Typically, when people think best player on the team they think best scorer. Especially when they speak of said player as being the/a face of the league type of player. I used the J.Kidd/VC example because J. Kidd was always the best player on those New Jersey teams despite the scoring prowess of VC and RJ.

With all the injuries of late and defenses focusing on him, Scottie is having a hard time being Kidd or VC, much less both.

Big trades happened and then all the injuries to staters (3 of your 5 are out) so can't judge a thing yet. And Masai HAS to make a move or two still, he's trading a first with one or more of Trent, Bruce, Boucher, Thad, Temple, filler etc

Everyone but Barnes, IQ, Barrett and Dick are available and I'd bet he hangs onto Nwora.

Nwora likely isn't going anywhere. He has been impressive and is only making $3M. You could probably re-sign him for cheap.

                  • Most of what Scottie does on offence is ultimately to pass the ball it seems to me. Which is great but he has the tools to be a scorer and I think he just has to learn when its better for him, and the team, to shoot than pass, and when its better for him to make a move to score rather than pass. His passing game will grow exponentially if he can raise his scoring in an effective way. More attention, more opportunities to pass. And he really only has to have that mindset for 5-10 more possessions a game, nothing drastic. He'll get there.

It will also help when he has a more balanced team around him. He's got too much of the defensive load on him right now with Jak out and a backcourt that's letting opposing players get by them with little resistance.

                      • Everyone relax, Scottie is playing in gear 1, management and him realizes that there is no point playing at high risk since there trying 2 evaluate talent, more like, let the talent who are not gonna be here for long time, get there numbers and trade value up.
Look who is not playing RJ, IQ, Poeltl..all these guys should be back next year, I hope we can move Poeltl, but u still need a reasonable center, unfortunately he makes 2 good money and would be hard 2 move him.
As for Scottie thing, I'm not worried, February 8th, off season and than next year.
                        Than will c.

                        • I saw an interview with his trainer and I think he feels the exact same way as most of you guys. Scottie is a pass first, team oriented guy that is in the process of learning how to be a scorer. We will see if its possible, as his instincts seem very strongly ingrained, but his trainer is telling him all of these things. Said given the opportunity to have Scottie workout with anyone alive or dead in history, he would pick KD because of how he gets his shots up. That's telling.

Yep. Scottie’s role model was Magic Johnson, who was rarely in the top 20 leading scorers.
