The new "excuse" is and should be that Scottie is young and this is simply going to take time. He's shown flashes of greatness and frankly is averaging out to a fantastic player but being that every single night is going to take time. As will dealing with the adversity on the nights where he doesn't have it.
That's the real change with all those established guys removed - no more security blanket, no more safety net. And all the spotlight.
Ok. So the new excuse is it's going to take some time. That's fine. I'll give him another year. I always say that if you've not shown any improvement after your 4th year then you are what you are as a player doesn't matter what your age is. If you remember I said that about Trent a few years ago even though some idiot here kept saying he's only 23. Trent is what he is.
And yes, I think RJ and IQ are what they are as a player.

you think scottie hasn't shown any improvement? same dude as in college?

Uhh, how are you going to say that he hasn't shown any improvement. He's already shown significant improvement from his first two years, and he's playing all-star level basketball.
Kyle Lowry's 4th season: 39% from the field, 27% from 3, 9 PPG, 3 RPG, 4 APG. THAT guy will never be a significant contributor to a championship team.

His shot has obviously gotten better. But the expectation here for him is superstar right? then I need him to play like one next year. If he's the same player next year then he's never going to be one. You can quickly tell if a player is going to be great very early in their career.
At the height of all the Fred is bad for the team stuff last season I was saying that Fred was sheltering Scottie from all the hate and when he goes fans were going to turn on Scottie. It's starting to become reality now that he's the leader of the team. The sooner guys develop and they start playing some cohesive basketball the better it will be for everyone.
There was a follow up question and Scottie clarified that they did talk but that the conversation was mostly about the actual game, which makes some sense.
Basketball is about happiness? That sounds like a direct quote from coach Darko. lol. Darko is exactly what the Doctor ordered.
But seriously Doc, are you implying that Scottie is so mentally fragile that losing OG has sent him spiralling into the abyss? That a serious problem. You can't fix mentally weak - as we've seen with Ben Simmons, our own Bargnani and many others. I will choose not to believe this line of reasoning... for now. It's way too depressing, if true.
I don't think he give 2 f&^& about Darko.
Darko is different problem all together.
I don't think Scottie is mentally depressed.
His just fatigueed, right now this is 2 much for him, his trying 2 do much with the team we have and coaching that doesn't care about winning.
He needs rest, I believe his hurt, playing through it.
Everyone gotta dial it back and give him some space 2 breath, he needs 2 take some time off. Rest. At least few games to couple weeks.

Of course Darko is covering for him. That's what coaches do.
But it doesn't excuse Scottie doing it. Kid has a lot of growing up to do. He came into the league all smiles and hugs, which everyone loved. But he also never played losing basketball before he came to the pros, and now the smiles and hugs are disappearing. It sucks to lose and you want him to hate it, but there's a way a mature player deals with it. Especially when the losing is happening mainly because the franchise is trying to rebuild around YOU.
If he turns into Vince or T-Mac and wants to leave, then he's not the guy they think he is.

i don't know if it is an expectation so much as a hope, although if that is a widely held expectation among the fanbase it sure would explain a lot of the toxicity online. personally i think he has the talent and i think he has a good chance of achieving it. but i don't think we did much to foster it until recently, so it's early in the process and isn't going to happen overnight
generally i agree that you can tell who'll be a superstar early because superstars tend to be super talented, but i don't think year 3 or 4 is a hard or fast rule or anything. kawhi steph giannis etc all took a few years before ppl realized what their ceilings could be.

Well Masai and Bobby have both said Scottie's all star level jump this season came as a bit of surprise. If it happened last season, they probably would have moved on from the Fred/Pascal/OG core last season, but Scottie was going through his slumps and they gave that core one last shot by getting Poeltl.

3rd year.
How many players became superstars in 3 years?
