I do remember hearing that his jumpshot looked good and improved in the Raptors work outs.

I'm gonna allow myself this one day to be grumpy, then I'll move on and root for Scottie. He's a Raptor now and I want to see him succeed. I will say this this today though, this team needed:
--A leading scorer that can generate his own shot and be a bucket getter in the crunch
--A taller point guard or shooting guard to space the floor and break up our double-short backcourt
--An anchoring Centre
While I didn't expect all these to be resolved at the draft, none of them were, and they were arguably made worse by introducing a non-shooter, with no other trades. We had a lot of trouble scoring in the half court over the past 2 seasons, and that looks to continue. The team looks unidimensional and unbalanced, and our half-court points will continue to come from slow and inefficient Pascal Iso's, Fred shots from the logo, the occasional OG spot-up 3, and a night here and there of Lowry or Trent brilliance. That's not sustainable.
None of this is on Scottie, he didn't ask to be picked here, but the fit will be tough to smooth out. The one hope here is a Lowry SnT to bring someone that can actually put the ball in the hoop from different areas of the floor. If we let him walk for nothing and end up with another non-shooter, then we're truly screwed.
Silver lining: A small ball lineup including Fred-OG-Scottie-Siakam after it's well oiled will be an absolute nightmare for other teams to score on. There's no pick and roll that can break up the switching on that beast. That would be one of strongest 4-man defensive units in the league. The 5th guy MUST be a fluid scorer though. Maybe the solution here is to let Trent empty the clip and see how it goes.

well, it's been a long time since I've posted here
my thoughts: this was a hilarious pick in terms of the fanbase's reaction. lol, at this point you'd think people would trust this FO, especially on talent evaluation and drafting, but anyway.
I liked Suggs for his attitude, I thought he would be a good pick based on that, his physique, and his skillset. Barnes has a very similar attitude though, and everything I read about him screams high ceiling to me. Give him an outside shot, let him get used to the flow of halfcourt offence, if he's really got excellent vision - and it looks like he does - then with his physique he will terrify teams if he gets developed properly.
and just like I thought people might trust this FO, I also think this player development model and team should be trusted to get the best out of Barnes - and clearly they thought the best they could get from Barnes was more than what they could get from Suggs
personally my nitpick is that maybe they should've traded down. Orlando probably wouldn't pass on Suggs themselves, and if you could have gotten #5 + something else back then you get your guy + another asset. But that assumes they didn't try - they probably did - and that Orlando would have fallen for the bluff, which is perhaps not likely
anyway, my two cents

I'm not sure if he will be a Boris Diaw, Draymond Green, Andrei Kirilenko, Lamar Odem, or Hedo Turkoglu, but I do hope he is a good pro who does what all the top guys do, add each year to his game. Maybe in year one he becomes a solid 70& PLUS free throw shooter, year 2 he ups the 3 point percentage, year 3 he adds some post moves.....you get the idea. It sounds like he is a guy who really wants to work on his craft, if that's true I will support him.Twitter @WJ_FINDLAY

DanH wrote: View PostAnother interesting angle is whether he can play C. His rebounding numbers were very poor, but he defended a lot of perimeter players, so hard to get a good read there. His rim protection also a bit of a mystery, for the same reason. But he's incredibly switchable, and if he can be functional as a C (his inside scoring wasn't terrible, though also not great, in college, he is good in 4 on 3 after setting a screen and can throw curveballs as a PnR ball handler), that can unlock some insane defensive potential for this team.
I look forward to being impressed in summer league.

My thoughts of this pick:
A) I was shocked when I saw this pick. Fully expected it to be Suggs, that it was locked down for weeks and any whispers about Barnes was just typical pre-draft smokescreens.
B) Biggest playstyle comparison I've seen come up (not just on the forum) is Draymond - for 2 positive reasons: defend 1-5, and can initiate transition while playing a de facto C. Similarly, the comparison also comes with the poor/inconsistent 3pt shooting, which could develop. Draymond is a brilliantly intelligent player, so a hard player to compare to based on measurables. Draymond's ability to initiate the offence/transition as a big is a huge thing, as it really lets the shooters get out into space. That ability is unique and if Barnes can offer something similar, we really could have a unique team (since Pascal is somewhat similar in that way too).
C) As I sit here morning after, my perspective is this. The Raps clearly believe that this guy will be better than Suggs. Defensive versatility is huge in the NBA, and while Suggs is a very good defender, his size limits his versatility. Barnes and OG are a pair that can terrorize a lot of offensive schemes. Neither Suggs or Barnes is going to be a go-to scorer in the NBA, but Barnes offers a unique skill-set and that can create advantages. I trust Nurse to leverage it, and I trust the front office to scout it.
D) We need to play out in transition this year. We have good defenders, and good finishers, but I worry about our half-court offence. Barring a big move (I've seen links to Ball, but I don't think that changes how we would best play), we lack that dominant scorer to carry the offence, so sum of our parts offence and terror on D and transition seems to be on the menu.Heir, Prince of Cambridge

- If he magically grows 2-3 inches (presently 6’-7â€without shoes) like some players have after being drafted, and up his free throw percentages, we have a good 5.
- if he figures out to shoot and brings up his shooting percentages by 10% we have a good two way player
- If improves his handle, and passing to be elite, and improves his shooting percentages by 10%, we might have a generational talent at PG.
Obviously the height thing he can’t control but would be awesome if he turned into a legit 5. The other 2 scenarios will take a lot of work and some natural ability to get there.
