    • It's pretty obvious that this is a developmental year for the Raps because if they were serious about winning then Dragon would be a staple in the rotation. No way Banton and Flynn are better than him. Remember the game that FVV missed? guess who started and closed that game? Dragic. He played well too.

I agree. He struggled early, but got the quick hook and never returned to the rotation outside the one game. He is still a decent player and a vet.

Raps were always going to lose a Lowry sign and trade and the Dragic situation was always going to be a tricky one cause he's a quality NBA vet and those guys almost always get their way if they want out. It's unfortunate that there wasn't a deal straightaway to move Goran but it is what it is and we don't really know all the circumstances here or agreements between Dragic and the Raps.

But, yeah, it's tough cause they are paying the guy $19 million to stay home while they have key injuries and are struggling in areas where you'd think Dragic could help.

Yeah, once we got past the trade deadline, all leverage was gone. Lowry just made things worse by choosing Miami and having to deal with frickin Pat Riley. We couldn't even squeeze a 2043 future 2nd round pick out of the Heat. If Maxey and a pick was available last year, then I guess Masai/Bobby need to take a mulligan on that.

In hindsight, I think we can infer that Lowry didn't really want to go to Philly and the Sixers didn't really want him. It was always Miami and the Raps were never going to impede Lowry getting what he wanted, which probably builds more long term goodwill with agents and players than any immediate benefit an extra pick gets you. As you say, once the deadline passed, any leverage they had was gone, though, the Heat weren't going to pay a price knowing they could just sign him a few months later, so not much was likely lost.

It was always going to be a loss for the team.

Well, he was definitely not going to be bought out immediately, and almost certainly not before the trade deadline. After that, maybe.

Lowry probably picked Miami at the deadline last year. I doubt he was open to a move to Philly, or it would have happened.

Dragic has a lower AST% than Flynn or Banton, a 52% TS% (that's bad), and the Raptors' net rating has been 12 points worse when he's played versus when he's sat.

                    Maybe he's just been bad?

We got no sign and trade with Ibaka , Gasol , Green and Kawhi . Well lets hope that Precious Achiuwa becomes an all star cause we will have nothing to show
for all the guys who left the Raptors .

What is being lost in the discussion is that the Raptors did what Lowry wanted (he chose Miami) so Masai had to deal with what Riley offered (they probably negotiated upwards from Riley's original offer.).

Yes, you tend to be short assets after going all in for a championship. That's how it works. It's not, like, a surprise. That was the idea at the time.

That's not how roster construction/management works. Sometimes you just have to let guys go. Dragic is little more than an expiring contract, and yet we're somehow we're stocked to the gills with young prospects/players to the point where it will be hard to find playing time for our own draft pick next year, whether it lands in the lottery or not.

We've got a high-potential young team, with plenty of cap flexibility - rebuilt on the fly - to show for it. That's good roster management.

                            • Raps could have let Lowry walk to Miami’s cap space and signed Richaun Holmes. This ultimately comes down to are you higher on Precious or Holmes. Holmes demanded a longer contract than we would pay and remains to be seen who is a better player a year or 2 from now.

We may not be able to get Birch then. Khem was had for about the mid-level since we were operating above the cap. If we signed Holmes, we'd lose our full mid-level, and likely out on Khem as well. So that's another variable.
