  • Bench was outscored by 20+. Injuries have taken their toll on the depth and Nurse doesn't trust the guys he has left (other than Birch).

    • A deterrant in the middle would definitely allow opposing teams readjust how they attack the defense.

Birch does not address that and Precious has a long long ways to go. Boucher does not have the physicality.

However, just like most of his players, The defensive system of Nick Nurse is a tweener. He cannot figure out what is the priority, defending the driver/ stop opposing players to penetrate in the middle by over helping or 3 players collapsing in the middle or scrambling to defend open three point shooters.

His defense is mostly concentrated where the free throw line is. Why his team is mediocre in defending 0-3 feet and outside of 22 feet.

      • Sadly my glorious reign ends before it really begins.

Another exciting, fun game that just fell apart at the end. Got some Fred heroics this time, and almost pulled it off, but Scottie had a few rookie moments at the wrong time. Oh well.

Defence really has to shape up. Guys are not communicating well, you can tell on that end more than the other that Pascal doesn't have his legs or timing back just yet... The offence has been a pleasant surprise at least. Need to find more useable bench minutes, the starters are having to play too much. Personally I like the idea of FVV and OG out there with the bench (Birch if we insist on starting small, Banton, Boucher) for a long stretch, and Pascal and Scottie out for another (Flynn, Banton, Birch). You can sprinkle Trent in for Banton when transitioning to/from the starters to provide a little more offence. If you can get 6 minutes each half from each unit, that's 36 minutes for the starters, instead of 40. Could help with the defence too, keep the legs fresh.

        • I thought we had good depth coming into this season. Start Birch.. put OG at SG, and have Trent come off the bench. Give that a try.. we need a gunner off the bench, and Trent can help there.

Yeah, I'd like to see Trent move to the bench, he can still easily get 32 min, just like Tyler herro in Miami. Khem can bring his mediocre stability to the rotation.

            • It would appear that the Raps (this includes the infallible Uriri) do not value the centre postion.

Not much of an effort was made to retain Serge or Gasol during the lost Tampa-Covid season. Raps let em walk and replaced them with disasterous value village signings Len and Baynes.

This year we signed and traded Kyle to the Heat for two thirds of three eights of the square root of fuck all. The biggest piece of said fuck all is another non descript undersized centre in Achiuwa to pair with a game but undersized centre in Birch.

Even though this position is currently undervalued vis a vis positionless basketball we constantly double inside leaving the perimeter open or if we don't help then penetration off the dribble is met with low to no resistance at the basket off the drive. We lose a lot of close games down the stretch with little in the way of rim protection. Remeber how Garland killed the Raps down the stretch ?

An average to an above average starting Centre, like goaltending in hockey, is taken for granted and not paid attention to until you don't have it.
              Then its everything.

We are likely in the bottom quartile for points allowed on second chance points and the eyeball test says we are getting crushed on the defensive glass.
Despite the silence from the Raps... its a problem right now.
Watch the testiness of Nurse go up in the post game pressers as the Raps get to see Rudy Gobert, Rashuan Holmes, Steven Adams, Domantas Sabonis in 4 of our next 5. On the road.
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

                A quarter? :P

Birch is fine and if they start him everything should be fine once guys get up to speed, but I certainly pine for the days of having a JV to generate high efficiency finishing, rim protection and rebounding.

                  • In all seriousness, don’t see this team tanking again

                    However just pointing this out,,,,

With the last draft, swarmed with wingspan wings

This upcoming draft is loaded with tall lanky bigs

I think they'll take a similar approach to last year. If they get to the final stretch and are on the outside looking in, they may well decide they might toss in the towel.

I also, however, expect that is very unlikely. They've been plenty good enough thus far to manage a play in spot if not a playoff spot, and should be better as they go along as Pascal gets up to speed and we get a chance to play our full rotation and develop some chemistry.

I don't have really strong feelings about this but it is somewhat amusing that just last season the center position was one of the biggest issues the team had, the front office noted it made a misstep, then did little to address the problem and yet there was seemingly very little concern about it heading into the season. Not sure if everyone was caught up in the five 6'8 guys on the floor thing or something else but we just saw last season what happens when you have no physical presence in the paint: you give up layups, you foul a lot, and you lose key offensive rebounds.

                        • We may not be the Spurs to get our Timmy and went from Shame to Glory in a very very short period of time (2 years) because they already have a HOFer in David.

But I just hope that OG and GTJ continue to elevate their games as outstanding complementary players to a “future” 23-24 years old Scottie Barnes.

Took Giannis and his Robin Middleton seven years

Hopefully Scottie and the Raptors achieve their vision between 2 years (Timmy) and 7 years (Giannis). 3-4 years of continued reconstruction, growing pains and patience

New Orleans is an excellent candidate for a trade as they are yet again spinning their wheels. 3rd coach in 3 years. They got Zion who may or may not live up to expectations but right now the Pellys are a sad, make that a very sad 2 and 13. This isn't what ownership envisioned. To say David Griffin is on the hot seat is charitable. He can't whack the coach he hired 6 months ago after he whacked a coach he hired for a year. Nawlins is regressing with its current lineup.

This leaves the Pellys with a front court of old friend JV, Zion and Pascal.... in the backcourt you have Walker-Alexander and the kid from Charlotte Devonte Graham.

Raps are 5th best in allowing paint points:

But we also haven't had Precious, Birch and Siakam all be healthy at the same time. So that likely matters.
