There are two sides to the court.
We have to protect the rim and rebound as well.
And we are being beaten on a regular basis in both those elements of defense.
In Defensive Rebounds and Second Chance points given up we are either last or second last.
Rim protection and rebounding fixes that.
That part of basketball doesn't age.
Im not out on Achiwua... Its he is being asked to do something hes not equipped to do. Like being asked to build a 6 foot fence with 4 foot boards.
Use one and a half boards....yah I'm a math wiz

Theres an opening for you in cabinet in Ottawa.
Use your powers for good !!

Going to die on this hill.
We will not contend until that spot materially improves on both ends of the floor.
Love the floor stretching 3 ....
Hate that we give it all back up and more on bottom of the well rebounding and easy second chance points.Soul killers.

We already have our centre. The much, much bigger issue is…. let’s call it… high leverage half court scoring. But our centre will hopefully fix that as the Raps start running the offence through him more and more.

          • Really weird to look at Precious and think he's being held back somehow by being considered a center. That's his future in this league - strong enough to do a good job on the big C's in a help heavy system, but also switchable. It's the whole point of both the Raptors system and him as a player.

I think the point is the raptors think they can improve the spot through internal development. The kind of player you are describing either costs $30 mill per year or they have mobility issues that make them unplayable. Embiid and Jokic are doing to dominate every C in the league even if they were a more traditional C.

Hard to dissect a 25 minute video of guys just having fun in a summer run / pick up game.. but Pascal, Flynn and Banton all pretty much look the same. Flynn missed a bunch of wide open shots. Got blown by on defense a few times. He had one play where he was being hounded and got a layup to go down though. Pascal pretty much looked the same. Made some nice plays, missed some others. Banton did a good job cleaning up around the rim.

Barnes looks really impressive though. We suddenly have Karl Malone on our team, and he can dribble the ball. So that's exciting!

                    • precious is a center currently .. doesn't have the skill to play hte 4 and played the center spot just fine.. he is a smaller center but man can he defensively keep up with really the best of them.

I wouldn't say that most of those C's are unplayable. Vucevic is hard to play because he's a bad defender.. but most of those other guys were/are important to their teams. Even Brook Lopez who's an elite rim protector and allows Giannis to roam around on defense.

But size/weight is only one factor. Golden State won the championship with Looney as their center. But even they drafted Wiseman with a top pick a couple of seasons ago.

I think this is why we got Koloko. But it will take a few years for him to become a rotation piece. We also were in on a lot of center rumours the past couple of years. We had a lot of interest in Gobert apparently. Had interest in Poeltl and Turner last season, and perhaps the price tag for each got a little too hot for us, so we bailed.

Yet not having a traditional 7' center last season is not the reason we lost to the 76ers. Joel had a great series, but we primarily lost because the 76ers were hot from 3 and were really good in transition.
What is interesting about koloko was his foot speed in summer speed was REALLY impressive.

I think last year yeah if the price was right turner or poeltl would have been a great pick up but it wasn't .... I am glad we didn't get Gobert.

Joel did have a great series because of what you said but also because they literally took out half our starting line up and we needed two games to adjust.

I thought DJ Wilson looked pretty active.

Harper Jr. has some skill though he looked a bit lost at times.

Pascal missed a lot of easy ones around the rim but just a matter of getting his touch back.

Scottie looked thick for sure.He was moving some of the smaller guys around with ease.

Achiwua is part of the Raps core corps going forward. Just not as the long term answer at the 5.

So far under the switchable system post Leonard and Gasol and Serge have produced the Tampa Tank and a first round exit.
It produced Aaron Baynes and Alex Len and Khem Birch and by default cuz they sucked canal water Achiwua was pressed into service playing more minutes than a small ball C should against bigger stronger players.
                                Not stellar.
If once again we lack rim protection and defensive rebounding (unless our project big man blossoms exponentially beyond expectations) we should expect the same results as this year.... an early exit in the playoffs.

Again... Achiwua is a desirable member of the Raps core... just not as the long term starting 5.
