    The most he can get off an extension is 8% raises.. which would be about $111M for 4 years.. or about $28M/year.

    If he opts out of his deal and becomes a UFA, he can get up to 30% of the cap as his starting point, and then 8% raises after that. The cap is expected to be at $134M next season, so 30% of that becomes $40M as a starting point. No reason why he would get that.. but the smart play for him would be to opt out and get a number closer to what Herro got, then to take the extension.
    Makes a lot of sense for Fred, but then why were we even hearing about these reports, earlier in the summer?

    Report: Fred VanVleet 'Heading Toward' Extension Approaching of 4 Years, $110 million
    The Toronto Raptors are reportedly nearing a four year, $110 million contract extension with Fred VanVleet

    https://www.si.com/nba/raptors/news/...-agency-rumors

    My uneducated guess is that both sides were actually close to finalizing an extension for Fred, but the KD trade talks put everything on hold.

      I thought it was closer to 114
      Yeah that's about right. The 8% raises start at 120% of his current deal.

      So a 4 year extension should look like this:

      $21,250,000 -> this season
      $25,500,000 -> 120% of previous deal
      $27,540,000 -> 8% raise
      $29,743,200 -> 8% raise
      $32,122,656 -> 8% raise

      4 year extension would be $114,905,856

      And an AAV of $28.7M

        They have some time still.. but there were already some extensions signed. Nance and Adams got extensions. Herro now as well. So not sure what the hold up is now. Unless Fred wants a private locker room like Kawhi wanted and we're negotiating the details around that.

          Does anybody really think that Fred is going sign for less than Herro now?

          • $130M is the new $110M after the new TV deal kicks in.

              might even be the new 90....don't be surprised to see some guy making 80 million in a single season within 10 years.

              • 110 million for years (27-28 mil per) is reasonable, a very friendly tradeable salary asset when then the right opportunity present itself at the trade deadline

                • Salaries are past ridiculous, whatever.

                  In other news (SportsNet),
                  TORONTO — Some familiar faces are joining the Toronto Raptors' NBA G League affiliate Raptors 905, including Pascal Siakam's brother.

                  Raptors 905 announced five additions to its coaching staff Monday, including Christian Siakam, the older brother of the Raptors' star forward.

                  Christian Siakam worked with the club last season and previously played professionally for Bahrain Club and the Malaysian club KL Dragons.

                  Charles Kissi, Demetris Nichols, Noah Lewis and Matt Gray will also join assistant coach Arsalan Jamil and head coach Eric Khoury.

                  Kissi was part of the Raptors 905 coaching staff in 2018 before he to the Canadian Elite Basketball League, then spent last season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League.

                  Raptors 905 is set to start the regular season on the road in Washington D.C., against the Capital City Go-Go on Nov. 5.

                    The salaries are directly correlated to nba revenue. Salaries are high because the NBA is making money hand over fist. I'd much rather the money go to the players than the billionaire team owners. Nothing to call ridiculous, just fair pay for the revenue they bring in.

                      FYI the 8% raise is based on the first year of the extension, not 8% of each year - so the dollar amount raise is the same every season.

                      25.5M
                      27.54M
                      29.58M
                      31.62M

                      4/114.24M, 28.56M AAV.

                      His max next summer in free agency would be 40.2M. He'd be eligible for 5 years, but to compare apples to apples, that could mean a 4 year deal like this:

                      40.2M
                      43.4M
                      46.6M
                      49.8M

                      4/180M, 45M AAV.

                      Now, seriously doubt that his market is anywhere near that. But could certainly be above his max extension right now. Benefit of signing now would be risk aversion in case of injury this season, or a cooling market based on say a reduced role or minutes or something this season.

                          If Fred signs an extension, he won't be able to be traded until after this season is over. I imagine that would be part of the selling point on the extension now, at least another year of trade prevention and stability for Fred.

                            Pat Riley just messed up the free agent market for guards, just like Ainge messed up the trade market for superstars.

                            If I’m Fred’s agent, I would advise my client not to sign for anything less than what Herro got. That’s an obvious conversation to have right now.

                              I mean, it comes down to security. Fred can sign for 4/114 now. Or for something undefined later. The majority of outcomes has the value next summer higher than 4/114. But there are some outcomes where it is lower. So it comes down to whether Fred is still betting on himself (and his health) at this stage of his career or looking to cash out coming off an all-star and all-defence season, neither of which are guaranteed (or even all that likely) to repeat.
