Fred on the bench kind of wastes Fred's elite defence. Our starters are a good deal worse with Trent in Fred's place. Not really seeing how that's perfect.

If we're being honest, Trent on the bench is the perfect option. Unless you want to get liberal with the term option and say that Fred is on the bench because we added a superstar PG to play in front of him... Although heck even then it would probably be in the team's best interest to still start Fred and bench Gary.
I'm still not convinced swapping Trent out for Precious, in the starting line up will lead to good results. You're just magnifying the lack of good shooters in that unit.

No just that, what never gets discussed is that you'd be taking away the mismatch which Siakam has when being guarded by the other teams big(s). He loses that when Precious is on the floor and our line up looks more traditional.

    • That is a breath of fresh air that he considered the Raptors as one of his destination.

Malcolm Brogdon would have been a nice backcourt pairing with GTJā€¦and more PnR/ PnP plays with Pascal or Scottie. He can spot those threes or drive the ball to the basket.

      Boston fortunate in getting him.

P.S. I remembered a couple of trade deadlines ago, I suggested in getting him.

Brogdon/ Sabonis for VanVleet/ Boucher and 2 second round picks.

That ship has sailed, time to make a new raft before the deadline again

Trent's skills is perfectly suited as a 6th man. His one trick would help this team tremendously coming off the bench. He's not a starter. My opinion about this topic isn't going to change.

As for Joe, he's a specialist. Like a Matt Thomas. I'd rather have a player like that than say Brown or Wilson. I said the same thing about Dekker last year. They kept Bonga over Dekker last year because.....I don't know...wingspan?
Bonga played 69 minutes total last season. So we're hand wringing over a roster spot that won't get any playing time. Dekker would have been the same.

I think the overall talent level between last season and this one is quite different.

There's an article on the front page which spoke to what many of of the fans on the forum have suggested, and that is to switch out Trent from the starting line in place of Achiuwa.

While the defensive impact is obvious with that switch, and maybe that is enough to do it, nobody really speaks to how the offense would be affected. Just some random comments about how Precious has a budding shot and is working on his handles. Not really much to go on when making a big decision like that.
It would be better for the offense because Precious sets good screens. Everyone forgets about all the non shooting stuff that goes into offense. Trent isn't setting screens and getting guys separation.

            • Well yeah, it's not Trents role to set screens. That would be like FVV setting screens.

Brogdon's injury history always worried me and I am assuming the / is to say either sabonis or brogdon? We weren't getting sabonis without potentially giving up a younger piece. There will be more trades for sabonis level guys that will come up throughout the season as you outlined with the new raft comment.

                  • Sounds about right. His age (21) fits the culture, already been invested + plenty of room to grow.

Although the tweaks I would do is drop Juancho despite the guaranteed deal and sign Josh Jackson. Secure a 2 way for Gabe Brown instead of RHJ.

There was really no competition between Penny and Jackson. Penny was always going to make the team. The real competition should've been between Jackson and Juancho. Jackson imo has outplayed Juancho in these games.

Interesting. At worse we could have traded GTJ & Flynn for him but most likely we would have probably send a package similar to Boston's send which would have been a future 1st round pick, Birch + Flynn & either Thad or Boucher.

It's going to be great when we eliminate Boston from the playoffs.

We almost never hunt Pascal against C's, the mismatch he wants is a smaller player guarding him. C mismatches usually just end up with settling for jumpers.

Yes, the offence will likely hurt a bit switching Gary out of the starting lineup. Obviously the idea is to win on defence by a lot more than you lose on offence. Mind you, the offensive issues driven by the lack of cohesive plan with so many potential creators on the floor I suspect would wash out with the decreased shooting. It's not like the starters were a good offensive lineup last year.

Fred, like Lowry before him, is one of the best screen setters on the team, another reason why there is so much upside to him playing off ball. Trent could get there too in theory but I'd be shocked if he ever did.
