You can, but this is exactly the situation teams should avoid. Picking up that team option is ALWAYS a bad idea. ALWAYS. Why leave yourself open to a future mistake when you have no reason to do so?
so you may as well just sign a 3 year deal and leave it at that.

    • I suppose this is the advantage of having first round picks because you get 4 years of control + RFA rights

Only if they reach their potential. A high draft pick that turns bust or that never develops (yet teases you with their potential) is costly to keep around for 3-4 years.

Or you get a player like Zion who was out for 2/3 of his tenure and now you gave him a massive deal in hope that he will be mostly healthy or that could really hurt you long terms.

There are also 2 years of team option for 1st round picks. So they can bail early if the player is a bust.

Do need to know in advance though. Have to pick up each option an entire season ahead of time.

Yeah and teams almost always pick them up because rookie deals are so cheap it's not gonna hurt them even if the player isn't that great. Even the 1st overall pick is basically the same cost as a full MLE. First round picks are pretty sweet deals for teams.

Koloko would have been nice as a late 1st rounder. He looks like he has a low potential to bust for the role that's expected of him and his physical tools & talent.

                • I know it's just summer league, but man Tari Eason looks good. He looks like a steal at 17. Another guy that played 6th man in college... great length, wingspan and get after it...

                      • Finally get to see Koloko in action again. Let's see if Brooks can follow up on his last performance.
