Its just a matter of shuffling if...if... Millsap or Gasol or LMA want to sign. Its what the Rockets do. Sign guys then make the numbers work. Otherwise only the crap teams are active in free agency.
You know how they "make the numbers work"? They shed draft picks. That's the price of making numbers work. Look at what Golden State had to do to get Iggy. Paid off for them, but if you get the wrong guy with that strategy, you are left without assets for a long time just because you didn't plan prudently at the time of signing the guy.

Do we get the full 5.3 MLE again or do we only get the 2.8 left over from signing JJ?

Also, we still have the 2.1 bi annual exception right?
We get the full MLE again, IF we are over the cap to start the off-season (ie, we don't sign someone like Millsap, just our own free agents and whoever we get with the MLE). And yes, we also have the BAE, with the same requirement.

hey Dan following up on the dropping both Lou and Amir

that would allow for a 13m dollar offer yes? Anything to be gained by letting Chuck Wagon and Fields walk as well?

Also final follow up can we let guys walk and resign with exceptions instead?
You can't just add up the expirings. We are starting way over the cap - if we had 10M in expirings, it wouldn't bring us below the cap at all, so we would have zero cap space to replace those expiring contracts.

The numbers I've been quoting assume we let ALL of our expirings walk. Hansbrough, Lou, Amir, Hayes, Fields - that 28M coming off the books puts us 15M below the cap next summer. So to make a big offer, they all have to go.

We can re-sign guys with exceptions. But there are VERY limited exceptions available if you use cap space to sign a guy like Millsap. The Room MLE - about half the regular MLE - and minimum contracts are pretty much it. Might be able to bring back Fields and Hayes with those, but no chance on Amir or Lou.

Iggy was really expensive and GSW had a high payroll. Raptors are @ 48M and could sign either Lou or Amir to the MLE. It wouldn't be a big deal to get Millsap at a reasonable contract

for someone like Millsap in a sign and trade you would be looking at something like

            Vasquez/Ross 1st round pick
No way it takes this much in a sign and trade. But I doubt the Hawks participate anyway. They would probably prefer to go hunting with cap space than take on a guy like Vasquez.

You can't use the MLE if you use cap room, and neither Amir nor Lou signs for the MLE anyway, unless one of them drops off big time for the rest of the season. You keep saying we can do things that we simply cannot do.

Free either Amir or Lou or both sign Millsap then use the MLE on Amir or Lou. Either Amir or Lou will be a MLE player. Think Raptors signs Amir to a 3year MLE with the knowledge he'll be out because of surgery for an extended time. GV doesn't fit and move him to sign Lou.

Who knows? he's a 6.5M expiring give him away. It isn't the Jefferson and Beidrins. Toronto would probably get sth back for GV tbh.

even if you do get the trade exception, you still can't give that $ to sign Lou as we wont have that amount under the "cap"
i dont think you understand how cap works. and even if we could do this? whos the back up PG? chuck hayes is not even under contract to to run the offense. IT just WILL NOT work like that brother, unless you are talking about a huge overhaul to the roster.

We have Lou's bird rights if we give up the rights to Amir. Toronto is losing 30M and is under the luxury and there is no way they can sign a sub 20M player and 2 players who are MLE contracts. No team could operate if they can't manipulate the salary cap. As long as the total is under the hard cap they can figure it out. Since none of this matter right now nobody but you is worrying about it.

                          This is unnecessary.
                          And

We would only have Lou's bird rights if we don't renounce it and in that case we are not shedding 30 million off the books.

after all this conversation and if you still think you can magically manipulate the cap to sign all the goodies then I don't know what to say to you. #KnicksFanSyndrome

We won't need bird rights to both. Nobody know what the cost for either will be. Millsap is going to cost probably 4/40 at least but less than 4/60. Lou isn't getting 7M a year even if he wins sixth man. None of them are Melo type deals there is room.

Huh? This is targeting potential FA if MU is targeting Gasol there is room to go after Millsap. Under your logic only Sixers, Knicks and Lakers will get FA. Teams with cap space get crap FA they overpay for.
