Its too bad we couldnt get a first and expirings for fred. Has that ever happened a guy In the last all star game not even offered one first rounder?
We don't know what teams offered for him other than the shite packages we've heard about, but the few teams who were interested weren't in position to mortgage their future for a playoff pickup that might bolt in free agency. If a team like LAC or ORL or the other few teams looking at him wasn't sure he'd re-sign, why would they give up more than lowball offers?

I trust the FO here have a solid sense of his wants in terms of his next contract and are either planning on shopping him in an agreed-to sign-and-trade in the summer, or will re-sign him and deal with it down the road. He's still highly valued by the Toronto FO; a single pick +/or another expiring contract would not have been enough for Masai at the deadline.

But there's plenty of time for that. It's not like, once you pay those guys, you're stuck with them. All of them are good players. All of them will be tradeable assets for the life of their next contracts. This isn't a case of getting stuck with a bad asset like Demarre Carroll or Andrea Bargnani.
I mean you see how this season has played out so far right? You got guys rumored to be unhappy with their roles, guys jockeying for minutes, guys not getting the type of development they need to last in the NBA, guys padding their stats for bonuses or new contracts and so on. And the team continues to suffer because of it. Just went on the "Everything Will Barton" thread and there it is directly from a player that "everyone knows this team is better than their record".
Will any of that change until those tradable assets actually get traded?

It's a long game. Everything won't be solved right now this instance and we won't see the final championship roster for some time. They are building. Not from scratch aka tank but for a position where they still have assets to make moves and retool.

8-2 over our last 10 games. We're playing up to our potential. You're talking like we're 2-8 over our last 10.

But his value WASN'T high at the deadline; that's kind of the point. The best offer we heard about was 3 1sts, no players. I don't think FOs look at it like you do, in terms of getting a "free" year out of him before his next contract. Teams who want OG want him because of his skillset, not his contract. And more teams are likely to a) want him, and b) be able to pony up what he's worth, in July vs. February.
i know what the rumored offers were and that they weren't all that great, and supported the inaction when those rumoured offers came out. (although perhaps zach lowe distorted fanbase expectations to some degree as three firsts, even heavily protected, is nothing to sneeze at for a non-all star player).

i'm just skeptical his value will be higher in the summer. he's presumably due for a significant raise so his next contract will arguably never have as high a value as the one he is on now unless he makes a big jump, so i do think 1.5 years and 2 playoff runs on that value contract would theoretically net more than 1 year and 1 playoff run.

Bro, Memphis is the only above .500 team on that last 10.
We all know we are the dreaded middling team.

I guess if you believe all those things you listed, I'd be nervous, too. But I don't buy the line that guys (multiple) are unhappy with their roles - maybe OG, even there I'm not sure I buy it. Or that guys are not getting the development they need (are you talking about Scottie, who is getting very good usage for a sophomore, or are you talking about guys like Banton, Flynn etc., who haven't shown much any time they've been given minutes, and who may be showing more in practice that suggests to Nick that they are getting exactly the minutes they deserve?). Or that anyone on this team is padding their stats for bonuses or new contracts (Fred? Pascal? both? Don't see it, and it would be totally out of character).

What Will Barton said in his interview is the same thing almost everyone around the league says about the Raps this year: they're far better than their record, and nobody understands why they seem to be struggling this year. That's not an indictment, it's an observation. And I think the FO has been struggling with the same question all season after a promising 2021-22 season. Now they seem to have an idea how to move forward, and we'll have to wait for the off-season to see what magnitude of change they have in mind.

I don't agree with this because there are way more teams interested in OG this offseason, and teams with assets we actually want.

There were a couple contenders trying to buy OG on the cheap, the rumored offers were not worth it.

This offseason brings into play teams like OKC and Utah, among many others, who have young players and picks to trade for OG.

Not to mention everyone that was interested in him at the deadline will still be interested since they didn't win the championship and will think OG is the missing piece.

Portland couldn't deal their pick this year because it's lotto protected and might convey, now that they're tanking they will have their pick and can deal it, so their offer will be better in the offseason if they make one.

I also don't even want to deal OG. The return needs to be awesome or we're way better off keeping him. He fits Scottie's time-line perfectly and compliments his play as well.
i appreciate your optimism but i don't see teams like OKC or utah jumping into the fray for OG at this stage in their process, although perhaps OKC would if they like how they finish this season.

i generally agree with the bold, i'm one of the few who enthusiastically supported his last contract signing and think he enhances literally any starting lineup in the league. but if he wants out he wants out and it'd be foolish to let him play out the next year and walk if that is indeed the case

For sure. I'm not ranting about them not making moves at the trade deadline, despite wanting them to do more than just the trade for Jak. Just pointing out that there will likely continue to be issues with this team until they can resolve some of those issues. Even on the forum here there is constant debate on who the starting 5 should be (Precious or Gary early in the year) and now they've added another starting caliber guy.

Maybe I'd be more optimistic after the next 10 games. They've beaten some really crappy teams and lost to the good or decent ones.

There are 16 teams in the NBA at .500 or below, that's more than half the league. Statically the majority of our games will be against teams at .500 or worse. There are bunch more of them our schedule moving forward, 8 more this month out of 14 games. As long as we keep beating those teams our record and position will improve.
