Other than that Murray is the only valuable asset.
A package without Murray would be the 2 picks, Mitchell, Barnes, and Monk.

Why wouldn't they trade Murray if they are shopping for a potential star? Picks alone aren't going to get them what they want and it's not like Murray is a sure thing to be a future all star anyways.
And if things were reversed it should be the same. I mean would you trade Scottie for Jokic or Giannis if they were on an expiring contract, and not committing to stay?
Even that Kawhi trade it looked like Masai swindled the Spurs. But they never got OG or Pascal in that trade, or Lowry (our best player). And that's because he was expiring. Poeltl was a lottery pick but not some prime asset. DeMar is DeMar. Better than a player like Harrison Barnes, but we're also comparing Kawhi to Pascal or OG here. And at that time we also got back Danny Green, and cash too.

If the "star" is an expiring, then you don't typically have to pay much, unless that star is willing to resign where you traded them to. If Pascal or OG are gung ho about playing in Sacramento going forward then Murray should be the bare minimum we get back. Otherwise Sacramento shouldn't really offer much.

Kawhi is a little complex, he wasn't just expiring and unwilling to extend. He was broken, AND had demanded a trade to a very specific different location. Two very big additional factors.

I guess it will come down to wether Masai would rather let our guys walk for whatever cap space he can get in return or try and get some picks. Was Dejounte Murray expiring when the Spurs traded him to the Hawks? I think the return for the Spurs was picks and salary filler.

I see your point.

And Masai also has the option to try and resign both Pascal and OG. Which is what I hope he tries to do. It's why I think it's a failure that they haven't extended Pascal. OG I get since his new contract as a UFA will be theoretically worth more than his max extension. But Pascal's max extension is the max anyway. Unless he's gunning for super max.. but I don't think the hesitation was with Pascal's camp but with our front office when it comes to that extension.

Sorry but that is a different stratosphere level of player.
Murray's value is a lot closer to Gradey Dick than Scottie Barnes, and I would absolutely trade Dick for an all nba level player that fits with Scottie, even if they were expiring.

Sure fine.. but the same point stands. You don't get much for an expiring via trade, unless you know that player is willing to commit to the team that they traded for. Or that player is some fringe role player or something and you are bringing in that guy for a playoff push. But either way you don't give up a big building block like a Keegan Murray to get that type of player.
