  • I know we probably talked about them earlier, but I'm curious to know what you guys think about the three 7 footers that we could possibly target that are not named Zach Edey: Kyle Filiposwki, Yves Missi and Kel'el Ware.

Any interest in one of them? At 19 or at 31? I just think having Poeltl and Olynyk could be great to develop a young big that is not necessarily ready to play big minutes in the short term but who could be a big part of our team in a couple years.

    Thanks for your input!

*Also don't hesitate to talk about other potential C/F targets!

    • I think I want to take a closer look at Nikola Djurisic. Legit 6’7” with nice ball skills and improving shot. I need to dive deeper into his defensive abilities, but he could be a guy to consider at 19.

Can’t remember if we’ve talked about him on this thread or not.

I like Filipowski. Don't think he will make it to our pick but if he does I'd be very happy with that pick.

Just finished watching if March Madness highlights. Clearly has a lot of potential! I think Ware could be pretty good too. Missi seems to be really powerful, but I wonder if he would ever develop a shot.

Could Bruce Brown still get us another 1st round pick in this draft? Maybe a win-now team who has a pick between 9 and 18 would be willing to trade with us?

This was posted earlier, but watching it again it's interesting how they use TS as a hub. Similar to how Raps use Jak and Kelly.

              • I'm calling this "It's not the size of the dog in the fight and it's not the size of the fight in the dog, it's how well the dog can defend the PnR"

                From ESPN's updated draft rankings:
                #16
"Edey has trimmed down seven pounds from last year and tested out better in every athletic testing drill, showing the gains he has made with his mobility and explosiveness. He also shot the ball well from beyond the arc, an area Edey insists will be part of his offensive arsenal in the future.

Several NBA teams mentioned being impressed with his serious-minded approach in interviews, where he discussed the joy he takes in punishing opponents with his physicality, a trait that was readily apparent on film. Edey has fans in the top 10, but also plenty of detractors, creating a somewhat wide range that extends into the 20s, depending on how the draft shakes out. "

Basically a microcosm of this board with the like hims and hate hims.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

Missi I'm not sure about. Athletic rim runner type, but is mostly tools rather than actually good defensively, and I don't think he projects to ever have a jumper. Filipowski can shoot and is pretty good all around, really good playmaker for his spot, would be a great fit with the current core and system. Ware is kind of in the middle of those two - had success shooting the three this year but it might be a small sample outlier thing, his FT% was pretty low for a "shooter." But he is athletic, can rim run, but is another guy who is all tools defensively and maybe not all that impactful yet.

Personally I'd be very happy to grab Missi or Ware (or Edey) at 31 if we don't take a big at 19, but would prefer at 19 we grab Filipowski or grab one of the quality guards/wings I think will be there (Salaun, Devin Carter, Carrington is rising up boards and I need to look further into him, McCain).

Givony/Woo have moved Salaun #10 and Carter #13 into the lottery.

Salaun: Following a strong stretch of play to end his season in France, Salaun has created real lottery momentum going into June. A 19-point, eight-rebound showing against a quality Paris team in the playoffs helped highlight his considerable potential. He showcased his physicality, 3-point shooting and competitive motor, which all bode well for his chances of eventually filling a valuable role at the next level. Salaun, who turns 19 on Aug. 10, offers untapped ability and a strong baseline for a combo forward at the NBA level, though it might take another year or two for him to emerge as a consistent contributor. It's hard to find players in any draft with his combination of qualities,

Carter: Carter has significant momentum as he's in the midst of an outstanding month that has him knocking on the door of the draft lottery. He measured well and tested as arguably the best athlete in this draft at the combine, posting historic figures that included a 42-inch vertical leap and shuttle and sprint times that put him in elite company. Carter also had one of the best pro day showings we saw in either Chicago or Los Angeles, putting his Olympic-level athletic ability on full display and knocking down 30-foot pull-up jumpers with ease, as he did all season at Providence.

                    • Yeah, some mocks have those guys late lotto, some have them slipping. I suspect there will be a guy or two from my short list there available that I'd prefer over MIssi or Ware.

I would very much doubt the competence of any mock that has Salaun and Carter slipping after their recent showings.

2 guys that did slip on ESPN were Filipowski a bit (16 to 20):

Filipowski has work to do over the next month in solidifying his draft standing, as some teams have expressed skepticism after uneven showings in combine drills and private interviews. On one hand, every NBA team is looking for a 7-footer who can handle, pass and space the floor while displaying defensive versatility, something that was on display all season at Duke and also at his pro day where he had some strong moments.

On the other, Filipowski's nerves got the best of him in Chicago, especially in shooting drills where he struggled at times, leaving him plenty of work to do to regain momentum in private workouts.

                        and Collier a lot (11 to 21):

Listed at 6-5 by USC, Collier measured smaller than expected at the combine, at a hair under 6-4 (w/shoes) with a 6-5 wingspan. He did not alleviate concerns around his lack of perimeter shooting in drills. He then also sat out his pro day, which was an opportunity to showcase himself in a different light with decision-makers on hand from every NBA team.

Teams say it's unclear how much competitive action they'll be able to see from Collier in pre-draft workouts, which might create a somewhat wide range on draft night. Few prospects share the shot-creation prowess, scoring instincts and star power Collier boasts, but he'll have to find the right team willing to live through the growing pains that come with empowering him with significant ballhandling responsibility after his uneven freshman campaign.

                        • I'm still all-in on Devin Carter, but the closer the draft gets, the more it looks like he'll be gone by 19. I think he'll be a star, Dwayne Wade vibes.

At 19 for me, it's Carter and Ja'Kobe Walter, but if they're (likely) both gone, then it's McCain, and I'm talking myself into not hating da Silva. I don't think he has a ton of upside, but he looks like a lock to be a decent role player for years. I don't love Carrington. I'd definitely take a wing at 19 - the bigs are not strong enough in this draft to swing for one before 31, IMO. I wouldn't take Missi or Ware there, and I really don't see Filipowski as more than a poor man's Poetl.

At 31, I'd go Missi if he's still there, or maybe take a flyer on Oso Igohodaro or Daron Holmes. But there could still be a ton of decent wings and guards there at that point, too, and I would pass on a questionable C for a guy like Kyshawn George, Scheierman, AJ Mitchell, or Hunter Sallis. Please no to Ryan Dunn. They don't need any more total non-shooters.

                          • Missi comes across smaller than I thought he would be. He's 6'10.75 with a 7'2 wingspan from the combine. He's more of a PF than a C with those measurements.

This is a poor comparison. Filipowski is a stretch big, his offense is 25% 3pt shots. Their offense is entirely different. More like a poor man's Dirk.

Filipowski I like as a prospect because a) he does have that shooting upside, which is a new dimension compared to a guy like Poeltl, but b) also has passing chops, so he can function in a similar role to Jak in the current offence, with playmaking on the roll and from the high post. His defence is the question, but I think he's better there than he gets credit for - high steal rate (which tends to be a good college defensive indicator) and his rebounding and blocks grade out only as slight weaknesses statistically rather than significant ones.

An interesting combination of the traits of our current starting and backup centers.
