Lol. In the history of the league, other than Yao Ming and obviously Wemby, name me a decent player who's 7'5+. Just decent, not an all star caliber player.
I've asked this question before here, without getting any real answers, but would Yao Ming even be "Yao Ming" in todays NBA? #1 Overall Pick, and HOFer ... or would Yao Ming be "Zach Edey" in todays NBA.

Was there anything that pre-NBA 21-year-old Yao did obviously better than Edey? And let's be honest with ourselves. My answer is no.

I think this is exactly right. Yao would have been a serviceable big in the modern NBA, not a #1 pick and not a true star player, and Edey probably will be much the same. Bit hard to tell from the college game but Edey looks like the superior athlete with his monster dunks and blocks, better usable length - Yao at least gave the impression of having T-rex arms.

Edey needs to land in the right circumstance, with a slower-paced team that really cares about interior defense. Knicks probably as good a fit as he's going to find. Maybe Chicago?

Midrange shooting was light years better.

You must have completely forgotten everything about Yao.

He was special because he was gigantic and had range out to the 3pt line.

He wasn't a traditional big. Edey is a traditional big. He only functions directly under the basket.

I mean, Yao didn't exactly make the HOF based solely on his on-court/playoff production...

                  Why? China voted him in?

Because he was so famous, such an anomaly as a 7'5 Chinese #1 pick, and because he did so much for the popularity of the game in China and for the NBA-China relationship. Most HOFers have a bit more longevity than 7 seasons. Also didn't hurt that he was drafted by the right franchise in the right era to have the success that he did.

Aight so the guy "who got lucky being HOF and probably wouldn't even be that good in this era" is great comp to Edey. And that's endorsement for Edey?

What I really want to know is, is Joey related to Edey? hmm.

                          • This feels like the type of draft, if any, that the Raps would try and move up to grab somebody. It might be the best opportunity to buy low of any draft and Raps are always looking to buy low.

Adding another pick, or trading one (or two) for another?

Is that what I said? Doesn't sound at all like what I said. But .. k?

Yao Ming is in the HOF for his efforts as an "Ambassador to Basketball". Not because of his play.

And to Primer saying Yao had "range out to 3" - he's got the same range that Edey has displayed.
Yao took 10 3 pointers in his career, total. And of his 6400 career FGs, like 6000 were within 12 feet tops, so I'm not sure what you are "remembering" about Yao, but he wasn't stretching the defense by any means.
