In all honesty, I'm gonna say something else: Why not let DD go? Powell takes the starter role at SG, Ross comes in off the bench still.

Ceiling though. Powell is only two years younger than Ross, and Ross was a better player at 22/23 than Powell is now. Powell is turning into a nice second round pick, a solid asset. But I'm not sure he's much more than that. I don't see starter potential there, I see a deep bench guy on a good team.

That's great, but if we lose DeMar or Lowry in free agency in one of the next two summers, or age catches up to Lowry, we're going to need to retool a younger team, and Ross/JV are the best assets we have to do that. They're the guys who keep the team moving forward past Lowry/DeMar's primes.
I personally don't think that either Ross or Jonas are players good enough to consider "core" pieces in a future rebuild.

If/when we lose DeRozan and Lowry, I say we bottom out, start from scratch, and attempt to build with A+ talent.

I think we should bottom out too - but that doesn't mean losing JV and Ross - both are young enough to be part of a rebuild.

Agreed, but I wouldn't hold onto JV and/or Ross simply for the sake of this future rebuild, if it makes sense to use one of them to improve the team today.

Ross plays about 40-50 decent games a season and is almost unplayable in the other 30-40. People talk about how playoffs are the only thing that matters, well, Ross has been putrid two seasons in a row. Ross is fine off the bench for 20-25 MPG when he's hot but he's not a guy you rely on to move a team anywhere but down in the standings. Yes, he's a terrific three point shooter and, when he feels like it, can be a decent defender but he is a role player not a core piece. There's nothing wrong with that. I like Ross. But the idea he can step into a big role on even a half-decent NBA team is a triumph of wishful thinking.

Sure. I'm just wary of selling on them for short term improvements. Trade them for Cousins? Sure. Trade one or the other for a fading veteran player to win now over the next couple seasons? That's a tougher sell (and a hard pass in JV's case).

To be fair it's arguably more fun being irrationally excited about D-grade prospects like Solomon Alabi and Nathan Jawaii than getting furious about our defence because we have high expectations now.

                  • Honestly, the pieces are in place to still win without DD coming back.

Powell is one of those pieces.

Raptors fans(in this forum anyways) have losers mentality. They're so used to having bad teams year in year out, and now that they actually have a good/respectable team, all of a sudden they want to bottom out and tank. Sigh.

As for Powell replacing DD. LOL. *shakes head*

                      • I also find it hilarious how people here talk so highly of Bruno, Bebe, Powell and Wright. Like they're real prospects.

Wright is the best of the 4. And his ceiling is a backup. That's it. Powell is nothing more than an energy guy, a specialist who can spot start from time to time, Bebe is the same thing. Bruno is just plain trash. He's lucky the Raptors have a DLeague team, if not, there's no way he'd get any playing time. He's that bad.

I doubt anyone has seen enough of Wright or Powell to determine that is all they are or ever will be, even Bebe for that matter. These guys could fill bench roles on alot of teams right now IMO. And if either of them goes the way that Derozan has gone, then maybe even starters or all-stars. I think Powell has alot of potential.
