Do you know what the rules are about not signing a draft pick?

If you decline to sign them, you must lose their rights pretty quickly right? and im pretty sure you don't get exclusive right on people you just outright sign to your d league team.
You are obligated to sign your 1st round pick unless they choose to stay in Europe or go to the Dleague (which has only happened once ever to my knowledge). 2nd round picks don't need to be signed, you retain their NBA rights but they're free to play internationally if you choose not to sign them.

    • You are not obligated to sign your pick. But if you don't, and they don't sign with a pro team somewhere, you lose your rights after a year. A pick signing with any pro team stops the clock on losing their rights.

Same applies for second round picks. If they aren't playing pro, you lose their rights.

As for the D-League, D-League teams cannot sign players outright. Any non-NBA roster player who wants to play in the D-League has to go through the D-League draft. The exception is that each team can assign up to two players who are invited to camp but do not make the roster directly to their D-League team without going through the draft. But only two. So no, you can't just draft a dozen second rounders and stack your D-League team - at best you can control 5 exclusive D-League entities, 3 with inactive roster spots and two with camp invite assignees.

Wiggins wasn't signed after the draft for some reason that had to do with the trade or because he's Canadian and Canucks don't matter

        • Huh? Wiggins was signed early in July so he could be traded as a salary later that summer for Love.

He wasn't automatically signed. There is a period that exists between drafting and signing first rounders. Him being unsigned was the first sign he was going to the TWolves

Yes. I'm just confused - did anyone suggest there wasn't a period between drafting and signing?

No just that first rounders are not automatically signed. It is not automatic and they could for some reason be unsigned. Just getting drafted in the first round doesn't mean everything is completed. Not sure if the guy who died from cocaine on draft night was signed by the Celtic in the 60s or what would happen if that happened today regarding cap and rights

No one claimed it was automatic. One poster claimed it was something you had to do, but never suggested automatic.

The team just waives their rights, cap hold gone. Until a contract is signed no money is owed.

Yeah, they thought they were trading his rights, so they didn't sign him. Then it turned out they needed his salary to balance the trade, so they signed him and had to wait a month to finish the trade.

Just a reminder that a d league team can only have like 3 players from your roster on it (or something like that?) and everyone else has to be willing to take a d league salary which is less than they'd be paid in Europe, Australia, China, etc.

Yeah, but if you grew up in the GTA, then pulling down a smaller salary, getting a living allowance, and working as a personal trainer, personal hoops coach, putting on clinics etc. it might be more attractive for ballers from the GTA then travelling to a foreign country. As has been mentioned, might have more exposure to NBA scouts as well.
