  • Success? We're talking not being a complete joke, not even success. Guys like Bosh and Love carried similarly mediocre rosters in less than ideal overall situations to at least some mediocre records or even minor success in Bosh's case. Most people would probably say Cousins is more talented than either of those guys.

A guy who is supposedly one of, if not the most talented big in the league shouldn't need much help to clear the 30-win mark.

Hard for anyone to have success when their top draft pick assets from all these terrible seasons have been wasted on Jimmer, Stauskas, McLemore (who seem like a good pick at the time at least) and Thomas Robinson. Robinson 5th overall is especially bad since he went ahead of Lillard, Drummond and Barnes - all players who would be significant contributors. Lillard and DMC would probably change the "not a winner" narrative, because environment and circumstance certainly changed the perception about Lowry and Demar in that regard.
DMC can't even make the playoffs - the lowest of low bars. What was the excuse last season when he had Rondo and Rudy Gay + solid role players/bench (Collison, Koufos, Belinelli, Casspi)? That should be more than enough for a legit superstar to get into the playoffs. Memphis got in with significantly less and Dallas does it pretty much every year.

Winning aside, DMC can't even do what Kevin Love did with equal or worse supporting cast in Minnesota; which is, put up monster numbers efficiently on a bad team. Or like KAT or Anthony Davis or Brook Lopez

DMC is a good example of advanced stats exposing a pseudo star. His teams don't "win" (i.e. squeak into the playoffs) because he uses too many possessions inefficiently and he doesn't necessarily make players around him better.

        • Just to play Devil's Advocate here...

          1. Kevin Love never got the TWolves to the Playoffs either...DMC actually has scored more ppg in a season and in general is a better shotblocker

          2. Bosh did so twice, once with a record of 41-41 and the other was 45-37. Wanna know prior to this past year what the average record was of EIGHTH PLACE in the WEST (45-37)....keep in mind majority of those wins also need to come against WESTERN CONFERENCE teams which in years past has been MUCH, MUCH harder.

8th place in the West last year included James Harden, Dwight Howard etc. People are talking like MEM was garbage when in reality they were hurt badly by injuries to Gasol and Conley which would be as stupid as people criticizing us if Lowry and DD were out but most of their season's victories were earned while those 2 were healthy. For the past several years 6-8th place was held by either MEM (Gasol, Zbo & Conley), DAL (Dirk & co) or POR (LMA/Lillard) -- much tougher than out East.

          3. Pointing out Rondo and Gay as players to help make the Playoffs in the West is laughable especially from this fanbase. We know damn well Gay is nothing worth mentioning, he's hardly a support player nevermind a CORE piece to carry your team into the Playoffs so stop embarassing yourself by even mentioning him. Rondo was so bad he was basically begging for a job after being booted out of DAL. Neither guy would be a starter on our team and that's his help/core to make the Playoffs in the West?! Puhlease. You have to be joking by pointing out a washed up players like Collison, Casspi etc those guys are about as low impact as the come...everybody golden just listed I wouldn't pick to play ahead of our BENCH nevermind start and let's not forget the constant changing of coaches...

Cousins is certainly not a true elite and doesn't belong in the same sentence with Shaq, LBJ etc but he's also not as bad as some of you are making him out to be especially when completely lacking context.

            • A huge caveat to analyzing anything that's happened in Sacramento recently has to be the fact that the entire organization is a huge shit show. How much success would Bosh have actually had in that disaster of a franchise? I'd definitely put money on less success than he had with the Raptors.

DMC is a very talented player, Kyrie and Love are not team winners but provided enough to win a championship with LBJ (he couldn't do it without them last year). DMC could help a team, but anyone would have to sell the farm to pry him away from Sacto.

When is this thread moving to Trade Proposals or Let's NBA or whatever? It keeps throwing me off on this page, since every other "Everything...." on this page is for an actual Raptors player.

                • Basketball is a team sport. Even C-Webb didn't really do anything in the playoffs until they put together that great team in Sacramento in 2001-02. Cousins isn't a LeBron who can just carry mediocre players to 60 wins, but he does seem like a Sheed or ZBo or CWebb who could be the best or second best player on a championship caliber team.

I just think the "DMC can't win" thing is overblown. I'm not even really advocating we go get him, but he's clearly a very talented player who has been stuck on the worst run sports franchise west of the Cleveland Browns.

Factors working against DMC that are not in his control
                    - new coaches every other year (even the ones he liked)
                    - clear lack of direction for the roster ("let's draft all the Cs")
                    - super competitive western conference

                    Factors in his control
                    - Top 5 in scoring and rebounding (only 27th in MPG)
                    - 20th in steals
                    - 21st in blocks
                    - PER 23.6 (12th best for players with at least 50 starts).

Those are impressive stats on a 33 win team where the head coach was actively trying to get him traded away.

As Lowry proved, being labeled a winner can as much be dependent on the environment as it is the player. He was a malcontent and coach killer, same as DMC, but with much worse stats. He seems to have turned out just fine.

To me, the only real argument against adding DMC is the cost. He isn't a Durant type player (proven leader and elite skills) but the cost may well be that because someone like Boston is more likely to be willing make the bet that DMC is better than what the Kings have been.

Great post, I agree with you, the only downside is we might have to give up JV and a lot of depth and future assets which could be very risky (but high-risk high-reward given he's a top 10 talent in the league).
