  • Keep in mind, not all potential all stars become all stars. So 10-15 potential all stars might translate to like 5-ish actual all stars.

I still think it's a useless comment to make. You could really make a case for the entire lottery in every draft to be "potential allstars".

      • The Lebron draft has 9, Kwame draft 8, Elton Brand draft 9 - those were all in a span of 5 yrs.

        4-5 seems a median draft.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

Except he didn't say '10-15 potential all-stars'. He said potentially 10-15 all-stars. Actually he said 'a potential 10-15 all-stars', which is poor grammar either way (need a singular subject to pair with the article 'a'); it could be either 'a potential for 10-15 all-stars', or 'a potential 10-15 all-star group'.
But by either interpretation, he's talking about the potential of this class being 10-15 all-stars, not 10-15 guys who have the potential to be allstars. Maybe he meant the latter and just screwed up his language here, and you argue that he must have meant the latter on the grounds because the former is absurd (and others have pointed out here that 10 isn't actually that absurd given other drafts... 15 is stretching it.)

The 1996 draft had 10 allstars.. so a 10-15 range wouldn't just be the "strongest draft in a decade", it would be the best of all time.

Chad needs to hold his horses
Chad Ford needs to generate eyeballs on every draft, which helps Chad Ford. He also didn't mention that there are 60 "potential" busts in the draft.

Then to be fair, in that case there are 60 potential all stars in every draft too. So he was actually being modest.

But yeah, is there any year where the draft isn't overhyped before Christmas?

But to be even more fair, there is more potential to have 60 potential busts, than to have 60 potential all-stars, or even 10-15 potential all-stars, potentially. But that makes a potentially less interesting story for Chad Ford.

Where was the overhype last year?

So what do they say about the strength of this years draft?

Everyone says it's a strong draft. I was responding to the "makes an interesting story" comment. Givony quote below:

"NBA scouts/executives sound incredibly excited about this draft class so far. Loaded with high-end talent, and goes well outside the top-10."

                          • "Vecenie compared this year's draft to the 2008 version that yielded Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Brook Lopez, Danilo Gallinari, Nicolas Batum, George Hill, DeAndre Jordan and Goran Dragic, among others.

Vecenie said this year's class "looks incredibly strong in terms of lottery talent," but cautioned, "There isn't necessarily a hyper-elite generational talent in this class I would say."

"Like, there's no Anthony Davis in this class, in my opinion," Vecenie said. "Rose and (Michael) Beasley (the No. 2 pick in 2008) were both really high-level players but nobody really thought Rose would develop into an MVP-caliber player, no one thought that you were going to build an entire organization around Michael Beasley and hope that it went well. But there were guys like Rose, Beasley, Westbrook, Love, Gallinari, guys like that, Eric Gordon, that have turned into very real All-Star caliber players. I think this draft goes, like, potentially seven deep or so in All-Star caliber players."
