Well, they play differently. The last 6 minutes or so of every game they go away from what is working and get way too predictable. It's generally worked cause DD and Lowry usually make plays/score but it's catching up to them....
Even a puck-head like Damien Cox on PrimeTime sports was asking Doug Smith after the T-Wolves game awhile: why do the Raptors always stop running their offense in the 4th quarter? Doug Smith as usual tried un-successfully to defend Casey's decision, but Cox wasn't buying it. Damien Cox knows jack-shit about basketball, but even he could sniff out a bad strategy when he sees one.

Lol @ Smitty. Curious, what was he saying to defend the predictable ISOs?

Just typical Doug Smith generic BS for the unwashed masses, i.e., quickly dismissing the entire conversation by saying stuff like "that's how they play", "it's been successful in the past", etc..., etc...,

it would be cool if the raptors beat reporter didn't hate basketball and everything in general and actually cared enough about his work to do something other than take the easy way out and invariably support the organization's decisions.

I don't believe Doug hates basketball. But I do believe he hates any pessimism directed towards the team (even if it's warranted). It's almost as if he takes any criticism of the Raptors personally....like he believes he's part of the team, lol.

Lol, he's much more interested in talking about bars in Indiannapolis than actually talking Raptors. The answer to any question is "Everything's fine, you don't know what you're talking about dummy." He would be the worst TV analyst of all time, halftime segments would last 30 seconds.

              • The thing is the players know the questionable sets and play calls from the bench reflect poorly on them.

There's no way that DD or KLOW demand then walk up the ball or start in the backcourt with 3 seconds left. They are put in these situations and they have had enough of using every last fiber of strength to execute these plays only to be considered ball hogs and choke artists.

I get that many teams in the final minutes of tight games revert their offense to ISOs or small action to get a switch for their shot maker on a mismatch but for the last month its been that way for larger and larger swaths of the 4th quarter.

Casey was a stabilizing force and a solid if inflexible coach but at some point management and/or the coaching staff need to realize that we've stabilized. The foundation has set. It's clearly time to start buidling on it.

Doug Smith has actually been retired for about 10 years now..... he was just too lazy to tell anybody.

                  • I find it curious that really the only 2 guys saying lowrys comments aren't about Casey but rather about how we have crappy role players and need more talent are the 2 spin doctors of the dwane n demar dynasty..or maybe it's not curious at all

Carroll's quote backs it up as well. It seems neither Lowry OR the role players like what's happening and came to the same problem. So while it's easy to say it's a Lowry/DeRozan show ... it seems that at least one half of that show plus the other players on the team are not a fan of it.

Well, they do need more talent. And too many of the role players (Joseph (general crapiness), Patterson (injury), Ross (inconsistency), Carroll (inconsistency, injury(?)), JV (inconsistency)) haven't performed up to expectations. In the same way that you accuse those people of reflexively defending Casey, there are a lot of people on here who reflexively blame Casey. Neither approach is accurate....

Sure, but the role players and top end talent issue was about having a punchers chance against cleveland, and getting to the conference finals again, taking it to 7. And being right there. That seems like ages ago now. Blowing a late 16 point lead to detroit at home, blowing a late 11 point lead to Minnesota, blowing 6 leads in the final 2 minutes in the last month, that's inexcusable, and that comes down to decisions that were made.

                          • Agreed that the offense became a Lowry/DD centric game in the 4th qtr...see Carroll's quote for inside confirmation! But no one mentioned the terrific play of Ish Smith on the Pistons. He torched the Raptors defense (?). Kudos to Gundy for sitting down his starting pg Reggie J. This is a weakness consistently exploited by opposing teams...Lowry is too gassed end of games to be effective defensively. The team has flaws and it is too easy to flog on Casey...who isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer anyway. He has faults but the team itself has too.

Last year's foray into the ECF may well have been an aberration. We got lucky I believe considering the slog thru to that series.

You're right, they do need an upgrade at PF and have been missing Pat big time.

But the question is not what is wrong with the team - the discussion is about what Lowry was talking about last night. And he was very clearly talking about Casey/playcalling/rotations. DeMar talked about getting "help," but he was prompted once again by the media on that answer.
