Very nice win. Struggled early with the starters, though they looked much better in the third. Defence was just everyone being a step slow getting out to the perimeter, but offensively it just seemed like the Raps were sleepwalking through sets, and odd sets at that. No screen and roll action with DD-JV, which is their best action and we barely saw it until the 4th Q. Siakam really doesn't help with that - he's no use off ball, so gets used as a screener, which takes away chances to use JV where he is best, and defensively despite all the activity gets lost often enough to be a bit of a problem there too.
Anyway, bench came in and saved the game again, very nice energy, great job by Ross and Poeltl in particular. Poeltl can't score to save his life but looks good defending in space and is solid on the boards. Biyombo replacement in spirit if not style. He's got that backup spot locked down. Ross caught fire at the right time - looking more like that aggressive Ross from pre-season. Nice to have. Powell got more time at Carroll's expense, who continues to look awful. I do think the silly Siakam starting lineup is cramping him a bit - he plays better with cerebral players, and having Pat beside him seems to go well. Never mind the overlap of skills - Siakam and Carroll both solid rebounders, Ross and Pat both weak ones, so each pair plays mostly together? Odd.
What's there to say about DeMar? Unstoppable right now. Bailed out the offence several times with tough jumpers, but he's doing a good job getting close to the paint to reduce the degree of difficulty on those contested shots. Giving him more useful screens would help him keep this up, and make it easier to maintain his effectiveness when he cools off a bit. JV had a weird game - fought really well against Whiteside to keep him off the boards somewhat. Got no opportunities except a couple broken plays late in the game (including one silly post up where JV tried to drive past Whiteside when he had nowhere to go and turned it over - thankfully too late to do any real damage). He's a guy who seems to need to be involved to be at his best, and he wasn't at all in this one. Woke up defensively at least later in the game and helped build a lead early in the third and to close out the game after the bench had a rough second go of it when CoJo forgot how to play basketball. Needs to be better for sure but the team is doing him no favours freezing him out of plays even as a screener.
Lowry had another solid night - not really posting real scoring numbers, but came through in the clutch and was everywhere defensively most of the night.
All in all, solid win. Weird offensive sets, lackadaisical early defence, and a CoJo meltdown, but the better team won out eventually. Hope to see more consistency in the offensive play calls, and although I know it's a long shot, would still like to see the right starting lineup out there.

And Carroll. Yikes. He looked absolutely dreadful. He can't keep anyone in front of him, and isn't moving well at all.
