Raptors fans love to overrate their young players. First JV then Delon, then Siakam now it's OG's turn. People talk about OG like he's Scottie Pippen defensively. OG is really not that good of a defender. Offensively, the ONLY thing that he can do well is spot up 3. That's it. He's a horrible, horrible finisher, his ball handling is below average for a SF. They really shouldn't be running any plays for him.
OG's stat line tonight - 10 points 0 reb 1 ast in 30 mins. He hasn't really gotten any better from last year. You can use the "he's young" argument. The fact is he's in his 4th year.

Yeah, but player popularity with fans has to factor somewhat into roster moves by management. And most fans and even media pundits were overjoyed at the "bargain" we got by signing OG @ $18M/yr for Covington / Aminu type of 3&D production. It is important because when you overpay for role players, those guys have to play way above their current levels or else you can't fill out the roster with the talent you really need.

C'mon, we're getting crazy now. Perception does matter, especially in an entertainment business, which the NBA is. Nobody is saying Masai is making moves based mainly on popularity, or else Jeremy Lin would be back here and Serge would never have left.
The fans and media "perceive" that Pascal, Fred and OG are young players with good upside who are critical to extending the winning culture going forward. Management obviously believes some of their potential (or hype) and were willing to place big bets on those guys. All of those contracts were praised when they happened.
I didn't like all 3 of those contracts (and got slammed on here), so management is obviously not listening to me... lol.

Raptors fans think OG can be more than a role player. That's the narrative that I read this past offseason. That's why they called the OG signing a bargain. They were talking all star and DPOY lol. And yes OG is still young, but he's already in his 4th year. He is what he is.
Look at DeAndre Hunter of the Hawks. Last year he looked like rookie OG. This year? he look like a borderline all star. He took a massive leap from year 1 to year 2. He is who Raptors fans think OG is.
I wouldn't say its backfired quite yet. Pascal started the 2019-2020 season playing well. Had a rough couple of months in the bubble and the start of this season (which really only had like a 3 months break in between).
Fred had a rough first game or 2, but is starting to play well.
OG shot 39% from 3 last season, 42% in the Playoffs, once he gets back to that and gains some confidence, he'll be fine.
Out of the 3, you could say Pascal is overpaid, thats about it.
We're gonna have wait till next year for OG..this years covid raptors team on my account will get a pass..they gotta get rid of some of dead weight..Baynes, Len, Mccaw Stanley, all the free agents out.. so on..unfortunately Lowry and Powell will have 2 get moved..Siakim, Freddy, Og, Flynn, Boucher, Davis..keep these guys for now and c in few years they are with different kind of roster players..ie..free agents, draft pick players..everyone relax..maybe this a good thing, little pullback for something better in the future..

My kitchen is always open to friends"
I was wrong about OG. Before the season I said that Siakam is a way better player than OG and that OG will never be as good as Siakam. OG imo has outplayed Siakam this year. And all he's doing is play defense(he's good at it) and hit open 3's consistently(he's also been doing that).
