The difference with FVV again was that we could have brought him back if we matched Houston's ridiculous offer. If Pascal or OG walk yeah that will suck. But we can also offer them more than any other team too, by giving them another year, and offering more per year. If Pascal gets all-nba, then even more than that.
I just think it's bad timing to trade Pascal now as he's an expiring.. unless Pascal agrees to re-sign somewhere else now, before free agency. But that's unlikely as his agent was pretty vocal over the summer saying he wouldn't re-sign with a team if he was traded there.
I get the trade value of an expiring, but we also have to consider if Pascal falters beside Scottie on a max contract what is trade value will be. If the FO has to think about that they very will could get outbid. If there is any question in Bobby and masai mind on if they are going to offer his max, they gotta trade him. If they have a limit on what they want to offer that's below max we will lose him.
OG is so good and value for what he brings will never fall. I'm comfortable maxing OG his value will always be there. To be the champs you got to beat the champs

It's only $91 million if they renounce all their team options (which would include Holmgren, Jaylen Williams, Tre Mann and many others). If you assume they want to commit to their team options, it's $129m; if they waive Davis Bertans (as expected) that drops to $121m, but they'd still have Poku's cap hold of about $6m as well.
With a cap of about $142M estimated.. they will have about $35M in cap space. Pascal's first year will be worth $42.6M if he gets a 30% max (based on a $142M cap space).
About $7-8M shy. They will also have cap holds for their first round picks this year.
So they might have to figure out how to trade some of their fringe guys to get more cap space. Like Vasilije Micic and Kenrich Williams. Can package one of their firsts to do that, and I think they'll have enough. Could be cheaper than trading Giddey or 3 picks to get him.

All of this implies there is confirmed mutual interest between Pascal and OKC in free agency next year.

I mean, hell of a “problem” for OKC. Lol. Too much young talent on great contracts, too many valuable trade assets and cap space. Pity them.
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/oklahoma...nder/cap/2024/
OKC has negative cap space in the offseason.
If they renounce everyone they can get a max of $28M so nowhere near enough for Pascal or anyone remotely close to his level.Last edited by Primer; Fri Nov 17, 2023, 05:49 PM.

It's bad timing to resign Pascal to a max deal. We're a very mediocre team and bringing him back locks us in as meciocre for another season at least. Deal him and build around Scottie in ernest.

Just thinking about the future.. we have a GM that's afraid to tank. So outside of Scottie we need more talent infusion. So how do you get that? A Pascal trade now isn't going to deliver the goods. But maybe as a 4 year player he can. I want Pascal to get us that haul. Maybe not an SGA but we should get someone good. Nobody is going to offer that for an expiring. And I am patient enough to go through another mediocre season to get that type of haul back. Because the alternative is we potentially have a better season now, but still won't contend.. and lose out on getting someone good to play with Scottie going forward.
You're advocating Masai run it back next season with the same roster as this season.
All for the possibility that if Pascal resigns (a big if) we could get more for him at next trade deadline (how much more?).
I really do not think that is what is best for this franchise.

We don't do well in free agency. And even if Pascal is traded for expiring contracts we'll be operating over the cap for the most part assuming OG gets a big deal. We'll have access to Dennis Schroeder level talents via the mid level but that's not winning basketball either. The draft picks we get will continue to be mediocre since I don't see us trying to legitimately tank. So we'll get at best Gradey Dick level picks and that won't even start until 2025.
Yeah the game experience might look better. We might make Scottie look better going forward. But at the end of the day the team will plateau. We need talent infusion. And if it won't be from the draft (unless we strike gold again), and won't be from free agency, the only avenue left is through trades.
So we have to be super careful as to what we get for Pascal. And I can argue that he will be worth way more when he re-signs then he would as an expiring. Or as a 2 month rental (assuming we trade him at the deadline). Of course that changes if Pascal is ready to commit to re-sign with the team that trades for him within this season, but I think he kiboshed those chances already in the summer.

Who cares what the fan base thinks. It's about trying to get the best team you can to win a championship. Assuming we get a pennies on the dollar trade for Pascal because he's an expiring (say 2 picks in the mid 20's and expiring contracts, ie the Vince Carter special), how do we get better going forward?

I don't think you can ignore all of those things.
Not mention, as I've said a zillion times already, if we wanted to deal Pascal while he's on a long term deal we would have extended him the second free agency began.
Then he would have been trade eligible this season while signed long term. We didn't do that. The writing is on the wall. We're dealing him this season as an expiring. Absolutely no other reason for having him in this contract status other than to keep him trade eligible.

Well if you completely ignore the fan base and butts in seats and money for the franchise and the morale of all the players and especially the morale of Scottie then I guess you have a valid approach.

The fan base has already been shat on since Tampa.. nobody really cares. The team still sells out. If the writing is on the wall, which I can agree to, then I'm making it clear that management has failed. He should have been extended. I completely agree. And it's bad management that he hasn't been. They can still re-sign him though as a free agent. Or extend him anytime during the season too if they wanted. So not all is lost, but they have lost out on an opportunity that's for sure.
If we don't trade or extend him during this season that doubles the level of failure.
Entering the offseason with Pascal as a free agent is worst case scenario.

Go get Luguentz and picks.
Bring back OG, Trent TBD.
Draft well, sign complement pieces.
In 2 to 3 years, we have a potential contending team..
Best defense in the league, plenty of shooters, one or two good big men ready to win. All around team with no holes.
Edit* I think the best option would be to trade Siakam, sign OG to a big contract and sign Trent to a lesser contract if he wants to be here.

There will be a bidding war for Pascal.
