I think there's two ways to look at this ... experimenting now allows for many different lineups to have at least a passing familiarity with one another come playoff time; rather than getting to the playoffs and then seeing Caseys crazy lineups that were never used once during the regular season. So in a way, this could be looked at "gelling mode", just spreading that gel real thin.

        • From a Blake Murphy article on The Athletic: https://theathletic.com/844158/2019/...gher-to-solve/

          Siakam last year:

(Worst three-point shooting seasons, minimum 130 attempts, courtesy Basketball-Reference.com.)

          Siakam this year:

          Elite sniper Pascal!

Everybody called those bad shots last year and called Casey an idiot for telling him to keep shooting them.

            • Giannis is also on that list and is also lighting it up from deep the last couple months. He is a real problem if he shoots 40% from deep, will disrupt the most obvious gameplan vs the Bucks which is to sag off him and stay home on shooters.

Not quite yet. Derozan is averaging over 21/6/6 (as a guard), Siakam is doing 16/7/3 (as a big). Siakam is a better defender and spaces the floor more now that his 3pt is reliable though. Derozan has improved almost every single year of his career, and while Pascal took a massive leap this year, we want to see if he's able to sustain it over the years to come. Basically they're at different stages of development, but it's probably pretty close in my view, and if Pascal continures to polish his game, it won't be long.

                  • It's also hard to compare the two since DeMar's usage was a lot higher than Siakam's. DeMar also became a facilitator in his last year in Toronto. Siakam is a decent passer, but that's not his game. He likes to attack more.

Defensively Siakam looks better but is also prone to make dumb decisions. Lots of open 3's occur because Siakam loses his man. Similar to DeMar. Although with DeMar he was always guarding the worst offensive player.. Siakam covers better offensive players typically.

If we have to rebuild (say Kawhi leaves, Kyle/Gasol/Serge leave in free agency) than that would be a good time to compare Siakam with DeMar as I would assume Siakam would have more usage then.

                    • its a silly question and this doesnt really help answer it but thought i'd share anyway

of course team makeup is totally different now so take these stats with a grain of salt:

derozan as a raptor during 2018 regular season compared to siakam this year:

                      DEFENSE:
derozan on court = allowed opponents to average 108.2 ORtg
derozan off court = allowed opponents to average 102.1 ORtg

siakam on court = allowed opponents to average 106.4 ORtg
siakam off court = allowed opponents to average 111.5 ORtg

                      OFFENSE:
derozan on court = +7.2 ORtg
derozan off court = +9.9 ORtg

siakam on court = +10.3 ORtg
siakam off court = -4.5 ORtg

in these statistical bubbles, derozan hurt both the offense and defense. we were technically better offensively/defensively with him off the floor.

meanwhile the team is definitely worse in both categories when siakam sits.

This team has Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green on it...not exactly a fair comparison. The startling lineup around Siakam is considerably better than it was around Derozan

                        • Yeah DeRozan is still struggling with on/off stats in San Antonio... he is what he is, a volume scorer with playmaking abilities and suspect D.

What Pascal has done this year is pretty incredible. Have to think he's the frontrunner for MIP.

yep definitely noted that these stats are bubbles on their own. but then again, checking spurs stats and its the same thing over there. they're better offensively when derozan sits, and slightly worse at defense when he plays (according to one metric really)

Derozan doesn't fit in the modern NBA, can't shoot 3s, average defense, a lot of mid range and paint shots. Pascal has improved his 3 significantly and his defense is still improving.

Pascal fits the modern game. He primarily shoots 3's or lay-ups. There is no mid-range with Siakam.
