I disagree that moving DeMar over Lowry leaves you with a better roster.

We know we are keeping Fred unless this trade is happening in Dec. Also the PG position is the deepest position in the league, many believe to be the easiest to replace.

I think DeMar, Kawhi, Freddie and OG is a better core build off of for the next 5 years, than Lowry, Kawhi, OG and whoever is playing the 2 or 4 (if you think Kawhi is okay playing out of position in a contract year)
The thing about DeMar is that his value is highest when you don't have more efficient offensive options.

The greater the number of more efficient options available, the less valuable he is, because his offensive creation is innately inefficient. The value is that he can create large volumes of it at a slightly inefficient rate, which is hard to do.

    • I think this year (his first year doing it) he showed the ability to facilitate on drive and kicks. As a second option, I think that would be valuable.

Agreed. I know Derozan has improved and that Kawhi isn’t Rudy Gay, but we saw how Derozan does with another high usage wing player, didn’t end well.

Is he also on the down side of his career? YES... think long term
Long term it gives you a year or two to from Freddy and/or find another successor. Giving up Lowry and Wright makes us weak at PG and doesn't do anything better for us long-term. Giving up DeMar for Kawhi makes us younger and better at SG and raises our ceiling, giving Masai a year to convince Leonard to stay as our franchise player.

Again, why would Kawhi want to stay to be 2nd fiddle to a worse player in DeMar?

I’m thinking short and long term, still would rather have Lowry. He plays as long as he can, FVV picks up a thing or two from Lowry and eventually transitions into the starting lineup.

. Nevermind that we need a big change and he's frequently been a problem in the playoffs given his role.

You’re right, Kyle is has been know as a clutch playoff performer for years! Come on!

Plus, the idea of a Lowry/Fred/OG/Kawhi/Jonas lineup to close games is incredibly exciting.

Yeah, but that second group would also have Freddy. You don't lose FVV in either case.

Also, what is this trade where we get Kawhi for Lowry and not send OG? I don't think that's a particularly realistic comparison. The core piece to the deal is either going to be DeMar or OG. I don't see a way around that.

Kyle has been way better than DeMar over the years and it's not close. Kyle has never had to be benched for his performance and singlehandedly killing us in games.

I don't see anything better about your scenarios for the long term. Unless keeping DeMar is the key...the guy who we know isn't a franchise player that can lead you to playoff success.

Kyle is usually hurt and can't shoot, and still the best playoff performer on the team this side of JV. If his 65%+ TS% in the playoffs this year didn't debunk that idea, I'd have hoped his amazing on-off splits every year in the playoffs would have done it.

Yes, it counts for something. Absolutely.

                            It doesn't count for everything.

Ok well Lowry is still a positive even when hobbled, just shoots worse. DeMar can be a negative, sometimes a crippling one, even when healthy.

So what does durability count for in this discussion?

For sure. What DeMar brings is valuable. But what the last five years have established is that it's not enough to be a true championship contender, and Kawhi is the type of talent that can bring that.
