If Butler, who is a top 10-12 player gives you assurances he will stay if KAT is traded then you would not make that move? Again, this is IF Butler assures he will stay.
I don't think this is the choice they have though. Butler doesn't seem likely to give assurances no matter what, and certainly not unless both KAT and Wiggins are moved. Which is easier said than done.

More likely the choice is, try to trade those two, and spend the year selling Butler on staying. Or trade Butler.

These days, the playbook for superstars entering un-restricted free agency is play out the season and keep all their options open. Even DeMar didn't tip his hand until after the season. I don't think the Wolves can take that chance, but they can start the season and hope that the chemistry changes and the team goes on a nice winning run early. I also think KAT is bluffing and will sign that max extension, regardless of Butler's situation.

If im Minny I would try as hard as I could to trade Wiggins while getting something like Ibaka plus Wright (Emphasis on "like" cause i don't want wiggins). Minny gains some depth and doesn't have as many issues off the court.

Wonder if Thibs would want Butler in the Western conference or not? Generally teams don't like trading star players to their foes.

If Thibs doesn't care, than one team that I wouldn't rule out would be Portland. I don't know if it would ever be on the table but I would look into a McCollum for Butler swap. Lillard needs a defensive ace next to him. CJ has 3 years left on his deal. Not a good defender but as close to an all-star as you can find in the league without actually being one.

Risky to trade a good player for a rental.. but the Raps did it. And Portland sort of feels like in the same boat as Toronto. Both got smacked around in the playoffs yet had really good regular seasons.
That Portland deal is really interesting tbh. Was kinda surprised we didnt hear more from them in the offseason

That is the impression I had as well. That it's a choice between Butler and KAT/Wiggins. If Butler agreed to stay I would keep him and move the other two with the hopes of getting some talent to build around Butler. Part of the issue Butler has with playing with KAT and Wiggins seems to be their work ethic if I recall correctly. Not sure if that will change regardless of them being young players.

Butler is not good enough to build a title contender around.

Exactly. Neither is Towns, but he has the ceiling to get there.

Takes a lot more than talent to be a contender and I don't think the other stuff (heart, work ethic, compete level) can be taught or coached.

                  • Messing around in trade machine and seems like the basic framework would be:

                    Ibaka + Miles + Wright + future 1st
                    for
                    Butler + Dieng

Miles could be swapped for Powell and salaries still work, I'm just assuming Minnesota would rather have Miles shorter term contract.

Is this the most realistic package or do people have other ideas?

EDIT: Realized Danny Green could be included instead of Miles as of tomorrow so he's also an option.

Dude why would Minnesota do this?

Think about it from the other team's perspective at least a little bit. Delon is an ok, but older prospect who they'd have to pay this summer. That future 1st doesn't have a lot of value. Just getting Dieng off their books isn't enough to get a deal done here.

I think OG or Siakam have to be in the trade, you have to give them SOMETHING of value dude.

Minny has zero leverage. Butler says he wants out. People arent going to be offering them much because of this and the fact he is a rental. They won't get much better than this offer guaranteed. I personally think we could offer even less lol Take it or leave it and lose him for nothing.

Machine covered it but I'll reiterate. They have no leverage. Butler has 1 year left on his deal and publicly wants the fuck out. I'd up the ante by swapping Siakam with Wright but no way in hell do I send out OG.

Minnesota does it because they want to get something of value in return for Butler. They are getting the short end of the stick, but that's the situation Butler has put them in.

So the Clippers are just gonna stand around and not outbid that then yeah?

                            • They have no leverage which means they won't get the usual return for a player of Butler's level.

However multiple teams will want him, you aren't getting him for basically nothing.
