I'm aware of where luxury tax payments go to. You can try to maybe give me a little bit of credit in terms of understanding the salary cap, you're not the only one who's read the CBA here.

And it's not even just luxury tax. Let's say the salary cap is $100M in both cases (hard cap and soft) and the luxury tax threshold in the soft cap is $130M. In theory in the soft cap you could have 10 teams with a $120M payroll and 20 teams at $100M. Nobody would be receiving tax payouts since nobody's over the tax threshold but owners together would be paying $3.2B in salary. In the hard cap case even if every team was at the hard cap the most possible is $3B.

Also a lot of owners get pressure from fans and the like (we even do it here) to spend into the tax to get better. That wouldn't even happen anymore which is another boost for the owner's wallets.
I try to give you credit but then you outline stuff like the above and prove I shouldn't.

Players get 51% of revenues. If owners spend less than that in salaries (and benefits), then they have to write a check to players at the end of the year to top them up. The cap level is set up to ensure that the average team salary (about 10% above the cap most years) falls in line with 1/30th of 51% of projected revenues (again, setting aside some amount for benefits).

Same goes for if they pay the players too much - the players have to pay back the owners. The method used there is an escrow account where 10% of player salaries go throughout the year. Any overage pay to the players is deducted from that fund before the remainder goes on to the players at the end of the year.

So, in your example, if the correct amount of salary (51% of revenues) is $3B. Then in the hard cap case, yay, they nailed it. In the soft cap case, the players have been paid $2.88B throughout the year, and $0.32B has been held back in escrow. The owners extract $200 million and allow the remaining $120 million to be paid out to the players, bringing their total salary to $3B.

How much the owners spend in "salary" is irrelevant. The players get 51% of revenues (sometimes as low as 49%, but that's dependent on revenue growth, not player contracts). That would be true whether you have a hard cap or a soft cap.

          • Just saw this clip today. Yes, what JR did was an all time Shaqtin a Fool moment. But why did Ty Lue not call a timeout? he should've called a time right after JR started dribbling the ball out.

James can point to this moment as a touchstone when he switches squads this offseason.

Because Ty Lue is a puppet ruler and this betrays just how much he is not actually coaching that team. Everyone who tried to pen a "Ty Lue is actually a good coach" article during this Finals run should be embarrassed. Ty Luke's job is to stand on the sidelines wearing a suit. He's the JR Smith of NBA head coaches.

                  Blatt would've called a timeout.
