We also went down 2-1 to a lower seed by losing the first game at home.

We simply have not had one dominant series win in 5 years. Not one, despite being a high seed every year.

Every year it's the same rationalizations. Only Raptors fans keep making them. Outsiders can objectively see it, which is why this is one of many, many memes (nsfw language):

Having Casey as a coach will do that, and having the system we had REALLY hurt us in the playoffs. That's no longer an issue.

That said, I think the expectation of dominant series is a little odd. Yeah, it would have been nice if they closed out the Bucks and Wizards in 5 games each. In each series Casey threw a game, which sucks, but at no point was the team in danger of losing either series, and they didn't have to play an elimination game in either. 2015-16 was different, that team was a) badly coached (always true), b) overachieved in the regular season by a sizable margin, and c) lost their best playoff performer early in round 2.

You see letting off the gas. I see buckling under pressure. Whichever one you choose, shouldn't be happening in the playoffs.

Really? Ragging on the Bucks series? The series was over. It was over the second the Raptors put a third ball handler on the floor in game 4. The Raptors let off the gas pedal because they knew it was over and the Bucks didn't yet so they closed the gap. And the Raps shut the door when needed.

    It's not that simple.

2014: We can write off the Brooklyn loss as a newly constructed core, with no previous playoff experience, losing to an established team of veterans who've collectively seen it all before. Fine.

    2015: Washington? No words

2016: Needing 14 games to beat Indy/Miami, losing both games 1s in the process. And our 'stars' producing historic levels of ineptitude. Nothing convincing there.

2017: Bucks game 6 - We scored 7 points in the final 14 minutes. 7 frickin' points. One of the largest choke jobs I had ever seen in my life, that miraculously resulted in a win.

2018: Yay! We won a game 1! Bust out the parade floats!

Raps haven't had any luck in the series - could easily be up 2-1. At least 1-2. The problem though is that you could make a case that the Raps are good enough they shouldn't be in so many close games to begin with and should have walked away with game 1, for example. Both arguments are valid.

None of that matters though because we still have people bringing up the Brooklyn series from 5 years ago as if it has anything whatsoever to do with anything in 2018 but it reinforces their view that this team can't win the playoffs even though it should really be that this team can't win against the Cavs in the playoffs. It's much easier to yell and scream that the team sucks and can't win the playoffs, which suggests very simple solutions that, shockingly, align perfectly with the arguer's view of the world, than talking about the fact they can't beat the Cavs, which suggests more nuanced solutions that likely don't align particularly well with any on person's view of things...

That quote from Young doesn't make any sense though. Gotten back into the game and made it a fight? The Raptors lost game 1 by 1 point in OT, game 3 on a buzzer beater by LeBron. How much more in the game can you be, barring winning the games (which, yes, I would prefer they do, but to suggest they aren't in the games is silly).

It doesn't sound like Young is considering game 1 in his evaluation. But instead, being down 15 pts in both games 2 and 3.

And the game 3 comeback with a ragtag lineup (including a very prominent absence), felt more like desperation/panic/luck, than a sustainable strategy capable of building on for game 4.

Yep. Biggest argument supporting the fear narrative comes from the Pacers series. They showed ZERO fear of Lebron. They almost took delight in punking him. Thaddeus Young sums it up nicely.....

“Toronto has to win at least a couple games,” Young told HoopsHype. “We’re sitting at home and watching these games like, ’Man, we would’ve at least been in a game. We would’ve at least gotten ourselves back into the game and made it a fight.”

    1. Please use paragraphs.

    2. You can use any number of "if only"s to pretend there might have been a different outcome. At the end of the day we are 2-11 over the past three years against the Cavs.

    3. If it was just about LeBron then why did the Pacers beat them three times while we haven't won once?

    4. A narrative isn't just a narrative if there's five years of evidence supporting it: namely that this team struggles in the playoffs.

    5. Don't worry, Masai will probably roll with this group for another two years because we have almost no other options.
Agree that MU’s options are limited. The most obvious is a new coach and give current roster 2 more years .

  • The Lebron Narrative and why the NBA needs a change...( We don't need to blow our team up)

So reflecting on this season two things come to mind. three were in the playoffs and you might not have thought anything of them the first was Freddie against Lebron after being thrown down gets right back up and runs at Lebron. The second is after Lebron was flopping Lowry took the game over. This Craptors analogy and Lebronto needs to be cooled the minute we were in Washington and struggling the Narrative took over Oh the Barney team is back oh there going to choke, Craptors stop and think. This is a really good team well Cleveland are on there last legs our kids are getting better look at OG's pump fake 3 and the 4th quarter defence in both games 1 and 3 look at our guys going punch for punch with Lebron. You can see it on the faces of Love as he flopped against JV because JV was just too strong for him. Or on Lebron as the Raptors were making there come back. When going up against a generational talent sometimes you need to take a step back after 3 loses. We are being killed by calls that are giving the Cavs FTS for minimal contact. The first time we played them in ECF we won 2 games a team with Cory and Biz Carrol and Scola a much worse Raptor team and they had Irving. A healthy Fred hits one of those two shots in game one and we are looking at a different series Lowry was hurt in the 2nd round last year. American media wants us to blow it up and go away. They are tired of the raptors in the playoffs and beating the American teams. Why not stay the course and give them a **** you the love elbow and Ibaka and 1 and its 2-1 now. The step back is Casey who cannot make changes on the fly The Lebron vs Miles miss match. Not pulling Demar earlier the need to constantly match what Lue is doing. Its 3-0 but does it feel like a 3-0 ass kicking or 4 game sweep. To me it feels like the NBA wants the same shitty Golden State Cleveland finals Every year don't forget the goaltending call that saved Cleveland in round one. You fire Casey Let Norm go, See if you can find Ibaka a new home maybe Disney World he can just ride the midway? and as much as it hurts move on from Demar? but you don't blow it up. We go to the ECF if we have that Indiana match up. So don't continue to have this we suck attitude I see everywhere. All i have seen throughout the series is an unlikeable Cavs team being held up by one player, and a coach who is hampering a team that could make the NBA finals. Bring in Stack, or Nick Nurse. Don't give up on our team.
Working...
