Well I read the turning point for him was when he went to China and was totally floored by all the Kawhi Leonard Spurs jerseys he saw. He was shocked by how many fans he had over there.

You're making a lot of assumptions on what Canadian advertisers will or won't do. You're making a big assumption that only Canadian advertisers would be interested in doing business with him in Toronto.
Here's a pretty good read on the topic and an example of what happened with Lowry.

Kawhi might have a chance with the right brand... it could be something that's quiet, reliable and performs at a high level. But the 'just passing through' image is going to be a problem.

Raptors’ Kyle Lowry flexes marketing clout with Sport Chek deal
    https://www.thestar.com/business/spo...chek-deal.html

“I play in Canada and it’s a big market, and there’s a lot of deals that are thrown at you,” Lowry said at a news conference announcing the partnership. “When you’re an all star you get a lot more attention (than in the past).”

“It’s not about right place, right time. It all starts from who the athlete is,” says Brian Cooper, president of S&E Sponsorship group, which helped broker the deal. “Kyle is probably the most relatable of all the Raptors… He’s the everyday man that works his tail off, and speaks those values to both youth and that brand.”
He’s a real adopted basketball citizen to Canada and not just another player passing through,” Widdis says. “He has a real chance to have an association with the Raptors that can extend beyond the life of his contract.”

    • The reality is, if Kawhi wants a big endorsement deal. He needs to MARKET himself better. A LOT BETTER. He's so quiet, dude never talks.

      • If Kawhi was so obsessed with squeezing every last dollar out of his career he sure doesn't act like it. The media just takes this stuff and runs with it because nothing ever comes out of the horses mouth

        • Mark Zeigler hinted that Kawhi isn't into money.. it's winning and loyalty. His inner circle might be into money.. but that's not Kawhi. So perhaps its Uncle Dennis that wants that huge endorsement deal. I don't think Kawhi cares less.

James Harden signed a $220M endorsement deal. Kawhi is rumored to want a much higher endorsement deal than $20M; Jordan Brand has been paying him $500k/yr. even though he's a top five player. To get to the point, yes, it could have an impact. If he can land a big deal in Toronto this season then that disproves a bunch of the shit talk in regards to Toronto by the American media types. They will kick Toronto through the dirt and finish with something like "hey, but I like Toronto, it's my favorite NBA city". Right.
Well, he isn't getting higher than Harden. That alone would put him in the top 3-4 endorsement earners in the NBA leaving aside all other endorsements. Ain't happening. James only makes ~$50M from all endorsements and Durant is around $30M so I don't know what 'much higher' means in that context.

If you look at the NBA top ten, there is a pretty big drop after the first 3 guys. I would say, looking at that group, Leonard conceivably slots in around Harden/Westbrook - so something in the $20 million/year range in aggregate for all endorsements.

EDIT: I mean Ronaldo makes less than $40M/year from endorsements. Kawhi isn't anywhere near that league.

            • If you want Kawhi to have a sponsor he should look into Norton or Symantec or something. Or some home security company.

              That fits real well.

              Forget the shoes.

Or to spin in another way. If all your peers are getting paid high commisions in your office and you're outperforming a bunch of them, how do you feel if you're hardly getting paid at all?
But they get paid extra because they make, or their sponsors think they make, money for the sponsors. If sponsors think Leonard can make them money they will pay him. My guess is that he will likely be disappointed....

TSN’s Raptors beat reporter Josh Lewenberg claimed the Raptors had decided to be “cautious” with the information, given Leonard’s sensitivity to the issue in San Antonio.

Lewenberg tweeted: “A lot of people asking about Kawhi's physical.

“The Raptors, who were already a close-to-the-chest organisation, are going to be especially cautious in keeping his medical info private, knowing how much he values trust and what happened in San Antonio when he felt it was violated.

“The trade is official. Has been for days. So, in terms of the physical, read into that what you will.”
To your point... the man drives a '97 Chevy Tahoe.

There seems to be also indication that the deal was done/completed regardless of the physical/medical outcome (this is the Raptors prerogative). MU was prepared to take the risk it seems. Also Alex Mckechnie is going to figure large going forward. Looks like the Raps are going to allow K to steer the ship on revelations ...for the time being at least.

Must be driving the pundits crazy.

Why? I'm sure all 3 guys will get along just fine, this is the work of their front offices. They're all friends, these NBA players
DeMar should do the fans a solid and privately tell Kawhi he's the lucky one to be playing in Toronto ....
