People need to stop with "the Boston trade assets" stuff already. It's been years. Celtics always have the best offer but, strangely, never get the player.
But you get a sense that they've been holding off for Davis. He's been the target. I agree with Dem's more sober assessment of the worth of the C's draft picks but if the Pellies could get Tatum and draft picks that would be a good place to start from. Then again, somebody but up a comparison between Tatum and Pascal and their stats are basically the same this year.

That's not a great haul for Kawhi. By that measure we can get AD with Lowry and JV. Demps has time, but not leverage. That one extra year beyond this season is what may have teams interested. Two shots at winning it all.
Its good haul .... . when the landscape is such that you are not getting equal value back for Leonard. A great haul is not in the cards...DD had just turned 29 when he got dealt and conventional wisdom was that he had a lot of kilometers left on the odometer. Poeltl was 21 and they got a 1st round pick. That it morphed into the high 20's takes a little shine off it but it was good deal for both teams under the circumstances.

Your thought that Kyle and JV is almost the same .. maybe not. Kyle will be 33 in a couple months and the wear and tear of 13 years in the league is beginning to show. His back that put him out for 10 games this year is a cause for concern even among faithful Raps fans. JV is more valuable to the Raps right than to NO and our earliest 1st rounder is 2020 but only after July 1. Its not in the same tier as the DD deal to SA.

Even though Rich Paul and Lebron have set up the landscape so that the Lakers are the optimal choice at present Demps's leverage comes in that he will get a couple of competing offers from teams that have better draft pick packages.

Poaching on a nice post from PlanetMars

Brooklyn has amassed some picks and has some talent. Davis saying yes to resigning in NYC and its off court opportunities is not a crazy idea.

The forever shitty Suns could really load up an offer. From Phoenix point of view they suck right now and even if Davis bolts they can continue to suck without him. They could offer up Ayton and this years first and hold back Milwaukees first as a sweetner. Thats a compelling offer. They could team up Davis with Booker and Bridges and Warren and take a shot at being respectable. If it flops.. well such is life..just like Leoanrd a bona fide MVP calibre player rarely comes up on the auction block. Take your shot.

They still have all their firsts going forward if they can't resign him plus whatever they could get in a sign and trade.

Apples & oranges. Tatum showed that he can carry an offense in the playoffs, but this year he has to defer to multiple options. Pascal is getting the opportunity than he can handle - and starting to get figured out a bit. Tatum can be a #1 option. Pascal might be your 3rd scoring option, at best.

The other small point is AD's trade kicker. It 'kicks in' in July, at which point Rich Paul can instruct Davis to waive it for the Lakers. With a year left on AD's deal, Demps greatest leverage is now.

In some ways, it would make a lot of sense for non-preferred destination like the Raptors, to snatch up an asset like Davis. You can always recover the picks and other trade assets a year or 2 from now because AD is so young. Raps make a ton of sense, actually.

What do you mean it kicks in in July? If he gets traded now, his trade kicker would be paid out now, and his cap hit would increase for the remainder of his deal.

                    Is this wrong?

                    https://basketball.realgm.com/wireta...t-In-Offseason

Anthony Davis has a 15 percent trade bonus in his contract, which the New Orleans Pelicans would be responsible to pay if he's dealt in July.

This would mean an extra $4.1 million payment to Davis. The trade bonus would be negligible if he's dealt during the season.

"There's no way they're paying that trade kicker," a Western Conference executive said. "None."

There's a belief that Davis and Rich Paul could say they will only waive the trade bonus if he's dealt to the Lakers.

Davis could benefit from his next contract being shorter if he's dealt by the Pelicans. Davis would be eligible for the top-tier max salary in 2022..
It's the Pels who pay it, so even more incentive for Demps to act now.

The Pelicans are responsible to pay his trade bonus no matter when he is paid. That bonus is generally higher the earlier they trade him.

Looking into it, the reason the trade bonus is actually lower right now (it's below 100k, which is what that article is about) is because he has only 6 years experience, and trade bonuses can't take a player above his maximum salary. His bonus would take him from 25.4 to 29M, but his max this year is 25.5M. So no significant bonus if he is traded now. Good find. Makes his request now all the more interesting.

It's not everyday the inscrutable DanH learns something from you about NBA salaries. Yeah, this auction is going to be wild... that is, unless the NBA has already decided where he's going.

                          Totally.

I have no doubt it will be between the Lakers and Raptors.

                          Kuzma vs. Siakam

                          Lol.

Doubtful that Philly will join the party if Simmons is included

Demps may not deal with a team in the West

Yeah, brainfart on my part - I knew the rule, just didn't realize his salary was so close to this year's max (and that he only had 6 years experience).

Well for sure Ujiri like the other 29 GMs is going to make the call to find out what the paramters are... For a player of Davis calibre pretty much everyone but Leonard is on the table.

Under the heading of on a clear day with no wind getting Davis to Toronto for this year and next would be a very compelling move to get Leonard to sign up again.. for how long.. two years plus an option or a one and one... who knows. However the by product of Leonard re upping is that Davis is now on a team that is set up to compete for a while.

As to who makes up the package from the Raps for Davis... we are going to say so long to a lot of very good young players along with a filler contract and a future pick (Miles) but thats the cost of Anthony Davis. If Ujiri is in the sweepstakes I hope he takes a shot at it.

Bravo, and I'm amazed we showed this much restraint before cracking the NBA Conspiracy nut.

AD holds a different kind of No Trade clause in the vein of, there's no way I resign with you dampening offers from anyone not in California.
