Chisholm: What to do with Leandro Barbosa?

I'm with everyone here in thinking that Barbosa would use his player option but on second thought....as someone who's not comfortable with the cold and isn't used to losing. If you were him wouldn't you go get a 4-5 million salary on a warm weather contender?

Barbosa will take the option. He wont get that type of money in FA
I agree we need to shut him down this season. Get him ready for next year and allow us to get more ping pong balls
Barbosa should be easy to trade next year.

So far in March Bayless is averaging 4.2 attempts per game, less than half of his early winter output, as he now attempts to get others on the team involved before himself. While there is nothing wrong with the Raptors trying to broaden the scope of his game, handcuffing his natural scoring strengths to try and re-invent his game somewhat negates having him over another semi-reliable backup point guard in the NBA. He now looks timid every time he's in a position to shoot and his shooting percentage with the Raptors has dropped from 46% in mid-December to 41.8% today.

Now on to Barbosa.
Trade him. This team will score the ball just fine without him. He's lovely to have around, but Jerryd Bayless is more than capable of coming in and shooting 20 shots and getting the same results as Barbosa. Let him do it. When Bayless is aggressive and given the Green Light, he has shown to be a willing passer and deadly scorer. Does Barbosa even have an assist to his name?!? hahah (obviously he does. Hopefully you get my point though. )

Imo, trade him and one of Bargs, Reggie or Jose or a combination of them for another Top 10 pick. Go all in for Kyrie Irving with our own Top 10 pick (hoping David Stern helps us here? David Stern, if the Toronto Raptors continue to suck, the team moves and your international NBA expansion dream disappears. I was extremely high on T Jones but he has not played well of late. Irving won't be top 10, he'll be top2.

Haywood? He is not a FA and has around 5 years and $50M left on his contract, is already 31, and is not very good. Sammy D or Haywood are short term moves that ensure mediocrity, in my opinion. I want to see a team built that has a shot to win a championship - not hopefully squeak in to the playoffs each year.

Just because a player is younger and cost less, does not mean you should play him. I think it is now clear why Portland and NO passed on Bayless. For all those enthusiastic Raptor fans who thought he was an ALL-STAR , oh, well, here is the proof for you that he is NOT.

As far as shutting down Barbosa, I fully agree. There is no point in Playing him now but this is NOT going to happen under BC and Jay.

To be honest, I am surprised BC was not able to move Barbosa before the trade deadline !!

Bayless has been injured which deserves at least a mention but you are correct that his on court play minus a few games has been awful at times.

I do not see All-star in him. At the same time I think it would be interesting to see what he could do in a role like Barbosa's. Leandro is a black hole, a player asked to score on the second unit.

It is tough to move a guy needing wrist surgery and has/had a pulled hammy and injured shoulder. He probably would have never passed a physical.

If Barbosa does opt out, the Raps only have $36.5M in salary committed. Lots of flexibility there.

I don't think Jerryd Bayless and Julian Wright will ever be paid their qualifying offers imo - the open market does not dictate that imo (yeah contending teams like players like Julian Wright but not at that price especially with the wonky shot he has). Both players I mentioned are worth minimum salary imo - that is what the open market dictates and what they should be paid imo .

Wright is a RFA. Bayless has one year on his rookie deal at $3M.

I don't always agree with Chisholm but I always find time to read his articles. Throughout this very, very, very long piece I kept wondering why doesn't he make reference to Barbosa's player option for next season? Barbosa may make the decision for the franchise.

Man, when Barbosa is on, there are few scorers more effective than him. I always felt like we should trade him but more and more I'm thinking we should keep him to help turn the franchise around.

Barbosa will exercise his player option. He would be stupid not to. That said, after the new CBA is struck, who would be the team that would want him at 7mil! There's plenty of "microwave" players that are 6th man material in the league (he's one of them along with Terry and Crawford). But of the three, only Terry is desirable as he is tough and has had good coaches over the years. Barbosa will be playing for another contract so I see him staying here, not because the Raps want him to, but simply because I don't think anyone will take him off our hands. I like Barbosa, don't get me wrong. I'd love to see his ribs, wrist and shoulders fully heal to see if he can regain his form.
