  • Who has Cap Space? Toronto Does!

As the trade deadline approaches, HoopsWorld.com looks at the financial situation of teams across the NBA, including Toronto:

    Toronto Raptors
    2011-12 Cap Figure: $53.7 million
    2012-13 Cap Figure: $41.9 million
    Traded Player Exceptions: None
    Source: HoopsWorld.com

Toronto's figure does not include JV or 2012 pick - nor does any other team.

Question: how does the rookie exception work for Valanciunas? He's not currently signed to a contract with Toronto I think, so we can spend up to the cap, and then sign Valanciunas and this year's first-rounder and end up about $7 mill over the cap, is that correct?

No. Effective July 1st their contracts count towards the cap. Like this past off season (once it finally started, that is) JV counted towards the cap until the first day of the season.

So... Valanciunas and our other rookie could conceivably eat up $7 million of our space, leaving us at a more realistic salary of $49 million going into free agency?

JV's salary will be $2.9M. The 2012 pick is undetermined. I've been saying $47M but, sure, 49 works too if they are picking top 3.
