Bryan Colangelo: Once again, we've been going through this process, we've been trying to make good long-term strategic decisions. I will fault the coaching staff for one thing: We probably won too many games last year in terms of part of this process. It's not that we were trying to lose, we were trying to establish a culture and that was a success. But at the same time, the draft process probably played itself out differently. We love Terrence Ross, we think he's a great talent and a number of the people I've talked to around the league think he's a great talent to have. But he hasn't had a lot of playing time early. I would have hoped he played more in the preseason to get more of that acclimation time in if you will. But that's happening now, he's been the recipient of some extra minutes because of some injuries. That's a good thing that will help us in the long run. Jonas is only 20 years old and really represents the future of this basketball team. I couldn't be more thrilled with that decision, now almost a year and a half ago.
It's great to hear it from someone that actually matters

I'm going to translate this into less abstract bullshit:

Why aren't you winning games? Focus. How do you get that focus back? Momentum. How do you build Momentum? Win games.

Team meeting they talked about defense? Sure they did. How to use defense to create offense. Offense, offense, offense. Sure defense is important, but offense offense offense.

How does Andrea get better? Fuck off.

What about those trade rumours? They aren't offering me anything near what I expect.

Tell us about the youngsters? Well Jonas is responsible for the teams poor defense. But he's awesome!! Someone else told me Ross was a great pick. We won too many games last year though he wasn't supposed to be our pick.

Why's Ed played so well? He hasn't, thats Andrea's position.

Will the Utah game turn things around? Well when you hit rock bottom that fast you get a good bounce. Now there is no where to go but up.

Shorter transcript: I'm not making excuses. Proceeds to list every excuse in the book.

I think it's awesome that he calls out his rooks and Ed Davis then blames everyone else for Bargs' struggles. Don't think he did himself any favors here.

            Nail, meet head.

Honestly, Colangelo has been so full of shit for so long and so consistently that now when he spews his shit, it doesn't even register anymore.

The simple fact, backed by evidence, is that he does not have a clue of how to build a balanced team that can compete consistently. He's basically playing fantasy basketball and hoping some of the shit that he's throwing sticks.

So the team is still young, eh?

The following stat shows that the Raptors have the 15th youngest team (yes, 14 other teams are younger than the Raptors):
                http://en.hispanosnba.com/teams/comparison

With teams like Houston, Denver, OKC, Memphis and Indiana all younger then them.

                Or how about experience then?

The Raptors have the 11th least amount of experience. Again teams like Houston, Denver, OKC and Indiana have less experience but are all aiming for the playoffs. OKC is even contending for the title.

No, it's not a talent issue. No, he's not making any excuses.

I wish he would stop bringing up Phoenix. He's living in the past and all he can talk about are what were his glory days.

I can live with getting blown out by 20 points a game if I new we had a pick in this draft. Tanking is what we should have done last season and ended up with someone whom could have filled a position of need. But losing game after game with no pick to look forward to is simply a wasted season.

I'd summarize this interview with one line:

The team built itself around Bargnani. Problem: Bargnani is not that good.

This interview reeks of a guy doing damage control and throwing people under the bus. This tells me that Colangelo is feeling the heat and he's either trying to spin this for his boss or for his next boss.

                    1) The statement that Casey won too many games last season -- obviously we won more games than he expected, but Casey did this with (a) no first round pick: JV still in Europe; and (b) no Bargnani, who was injured most of the year. He did this through drilling competent but limited pros who ran very good sets and worked hard on defense.

                    2) This team lacks talent -- of course it does. Casey, at this point, is unassailable. He's proven he can coach. Of course he defends the talent level; he's responsible for the level of talent on this team. He's in full control of the personnel.

                    3) The deal for Lowry made no sense because you still had Calderon who you still have not traded even now. Colangelo gave up too much for Lowry and now it's down to ping pong balls. 4 wins so far, we might have 10 by February. Weak draft? Sure, but next year's pick is going to be crucial now, for Colangelo and whoever succeeds him. How else will this team improve? There is no other conceivable way to build this team.. if there was, we should have done it already.

If the goal was to contend right away (hence trading away your first round pick), then Jose should have been moved immediately and JV should not be starting. How do you succeed while starting a rookie C? This is very hard to do unless your C is absolutely dominant. JV is at least 2-3 years away.

                    4) Even talking about Ed Davis is a waste of time. If Bargnani is locked up long term (he is) and Jonas is your future (as BC says he is), then you're talking about a back-up PF. There's no point in grooming a backup PF. It's one of the easiest positions to staff in the league. You could trade Ed Davis right now for nothing and it would have no affect on the team. Why are you even talking about his development when he's clearly not part of your long-term plan (unless you plan to hurl an Amir-sized contract at a guy who has no sensible role on your team?)
                    your pal,
                    ebrian

                      +1

I am not going to say I was a big supporter of BC, but at the same time up until yesterday I truly believed that he understood the mistakes he made in his first couple of years by signing casey. I thought we increased the talent level this year big time.

But in listening to that interview yesterday I heard a guy who is detached from reality. I agree that we should be better, but this guy just simply does not understand the level of talent that we have. At the end of the day, ever since he took over we've had just a bunch of good, nice guys on our team, and he cannot tell the difference between that, and the teams he had in Pheonix...it's all the same to him

Trading AB would send a message that he has grown as a GM. Until he does, everything he says is Bull SH*t

the only thing that depresses me more than this thought is the fact that we have little to no chance of keeping Lowry at the end of next year

Yep. Last year was a wasted year, too. They failed to develop any young players and, apparently, ended up with a rookie they didn't really want. Now, this year is another waste with no compensation.

You have to know that every other GM in the league saw this interview (probably through one of those big LOLcat chain email, because that's how ridiculous he sounded), and that they each made a mental note to take advantage of what can only be an increasingly desperate vulnerability in the near future.

                            Not good.

This. BTW, what happened to Colangelo fleecing other GMs? I remember that was purported to be his 'thing' when he came over. Snake oil salesman, this guy.
