  • Some RealGM Dwayne Casey quotes:

    RealGm wrote:
Dwane Casey said on Tuesday he was never concerned about his future this offseason as head coach of the Toronto Raptors.
The Raptors were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by the Washington Wizards.

I wasn’t worried about my job, never have been, never will be,” Casey said. “[Raptors GM] Masai [Ujiri] has every right to look at the entire organization, [like] the coaching staff, and evaluate everything that we’ve done as a staff and as a team but I think, if we’re all honest with ourselves and look where we come from and look how the growth process is going, we’re going in the right direction. I think that’s what the evaluation process shows.

“Did we make mistakes as a coaching staff? Yes. Did we make mistakes as an organization and players making mistakes as players? Yes. We all do. We all are accountable for everything that goes on, but again, big picture, we’re going in the right direction from where we started last year.”

The day Dwane Casey is no longer the Head Coach of the Raptors will be one of the most joyful days for me personally. The only other day that can compete was when I woke up one morning and saw Andrea Bargnani traded to the New York Knicks!

Casey has reached Colangelo status with me.

At the end of colangelos run, the very sound of his voice irritated me. I found myself listening to his interviews and calling his bullshit in every sentence.

Either that or RR has somehow collected some of the brightest basketball minds in the world because it is 100% obvious that Casey is one of the problems that needs to be eliminated now rather than later

That's the thing...I don't think it's just RR that sees that. It even appears to be the view held by a lot of people outside of it. Even the Toronto media seemed to be on board before it became obvious he wasn't going anywhere where the immediately switched to calling anyone who wanted him gone an idiot.

Hell, even most of the issues people have with the actual players come back to the manner in which they are being used which, again, goes back to Casey.

Yet somehow Masai fails to see this.

You're being way too reactionary. I wanted Casey gone really badly, but I can also see why he was retained "for now" and it doesn't even come close to justifying any fire masai talk.

                  The reasons Casey was retained:
We still owe Casey $4M for next season. It's easy for us to say MLSE is super rich so they should just pay him the money and a new coach even more money ($5M seems to be the starting point), but it's not a good business decision when the team is making record profits. MLSE is thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it, because the bottom line is good right now.

No obviously better coaching candidates, just speculatively better Assistants.

We already have one of the best candidates on our staff as an Assistant in Nurse, so a mid-season firing of Casey and promotion of Nurse would be easy and cost us nothing extra.

We won more games than the franchise ever has.

We won the division back to back years and got the 3 seed in the East.

Casey has improved the teams record every season, so a firing isn't really palatable until there is a drop off.

We were stuck with a mostly BC roster that is obviously mediocre no matter who the coach is.

There shouldn't be any Fire Masai talk until the team actually gets worse "wins wise" and nothing is done about it. The ending to last season was very concerning, and I'd say Casey is on some pretty damn thin ice, but it would have been a much riskier move to fire him then retain him at this point.

If we start next season terribly and we get the same rhetoric about staying the course, then it will be time to start start thinking about Masai's job safety in earnest.

You also need to keep in mind that Masai hasn't had the opportunity to do anything yet, the season isn't over, trades can't be completed right now, free agents can't be signed right now. At least wait until after the draft to get your pitch forks out.

Throwing away a 60M roster over a 4M obligation seems wasteful. Almost like building around and extending an overall #1 who is a bust until he has no value and is considered a joke

It actually is. Most of his moves seem just to delay evaluating him. As soon as he fires Casey all eyes will go to roster construction. It's why corporate teams never compete.

I agree here and I think I'm probably the person here who wants or wanted Casey gone the most.

I wouldn't be ready to even entertain this idea unless they pick up his (Casey's) team option next year.
