That was the one real tool at Casey's disposal that he failed to capitalize on, that and he could have slowed tempo and upped JV's minutes. Whether that would have resulted in more wins in the season or playoffs is debatable. In a way, using Hans as the backup centre on a very successful small-ball bench unit could be lauded as creative, but it was necessity more than anything.

I might argue that he could have upped JJ's minutes, slowed it down, and reined in Lou/GV, and the defense would have been better, but again I can't imagine the outcome being demonstrably different.

Both should've happened. JV and JJ's minutes should have been upped. Ross and AMir's minutes should've been cut. That's self-explanatory.


Casey once again shows how idiotic his thought process is by saying excuses. It's like he can't deal with pressure... so he goes ahead and tries to either blame it on this or that. It's stupidity.

I agree that the acquisitions this summer seem geared towards making Casey's job easier.

That does not in any way reduce my disappointment at how bad he was at his job last year. We don't pay him millions of dollars to do an easy job.

I believe he just doesn't see a better LONG TERM solution right now.

Plus he might be able to get the funding for a top head coach if he shows a history of not firing a guy with years left on his contract only to be forced to hire a cheap alternative like former GM (that is a reference to Sam Mitchell firing and subsequent hiring of Triano by Colangelo).

In retrospect the Casey decision still makes a lot of sense, he did/does offer stability and continuity, and we are still a (young) team in transition. The worst thing that happens is we get a mid-teens first rounder and bounced in the first round and a fresh start with a (star) coach.

The big question is the one that got brought up in the DeMar thread - What If he does exceptionally well with this team?

He gave him the shortest contract possible, and he essentially had no choice because we just made the playoffs after a very long drought (Jurassic Park excitement). This has been hashed and rehashed a million times on these forums so I know you're well aware, but the context of why Casey was brought back is extremely important. If he signs Casey to another deal then Casey's his guy.

JJ isn't a perfect player.

But he was better than the other Raptor options last season.

I think that was out of desperation. Luckily we have Carroll now and will only need JJ 10-15 minutes per game.
