Also the Bucks are a great example. Frequently spend money on mid-tier free agents, and frequently aim for the playoffs so they don't often get high picks that turn into top talents. Just keep on going with mid-level free agents and picks, aiming for those low playoff seeds. Their Truehoop affiliate even used to have the motto "8th seed or bust" (least I think it was them...might've been another Bucks blog/site).
The Bucks WERE a great example. Now they're the Young Bucks: a team with two very likely future superstars (Giannis and Jabari) plus more great young players with high ceilings (Henson, Knight, etc.) and they have a genuinely good coach in Jason Kidd, which Milwaukee hasn't had in forever.

Sure, Milwaukee more or less did this by accident, because they didn't intend to be sorry for Jabari, and god knows Masai was trying to get into the draft in 2013 to nab Giannis. But Milwaukee did it nonetheless.

Actually, I think a lot of people were holding the Hawks up as an example of how to do a proper rebuild to get off the treadmill. They dumped their over-hyped, over-paid 'stars' and have begun to build a solid foundation primarily through the draft, along with a few key free agent signings (ie: Millsap & Sefelosha).
The Hawks got off the treadmill by firing their useless coach and hiring an excellent coach, plain and simple. If Larry Drew was still the coach the Hawks would be scraping by around .500 ball still, regardless of the roster moves. The coach matters a ton, and people need to get on board with that fact.

      • I've been rethinking this game.

Teams are always due for a stinker over an 82-game season.

As bad as this team has played at times, even last night was REALLY bad.

HOWEVER, none of that changes poor subs, poor play calling, poor defense, double standards on accountability, etc. etc. etc. that has been talked about all year. How horrible they played last night only magnifies the issues that have been going on all season.

Kind of looking forward to this season to be over and see what Masai does next. This is really bad and unenjoyable basketball even if they are 33-16.

Here is a transcript for those who don't wanna watch 30 seconds of commercials to see a 2 minute interview.

After Casey explains how the starting unit was playing like they were in the mud.

Reporter: "Jonas appeared to be the exception in that starting group"

Casey: "He did, he rebounded well, y'know, he did a good job in the paint, in that situation, and it was just again, we just needed to...(making forward wave motions with his hands)...as a matter of fact Pat played the 5 quite a bit down the stretch, ummm, but Jonas did a good job."

            The guy just sounds clueless.

            • In the first part of the interview, Casey's analysis of the loss comes down to playing in mud and lack of energy. Nothing about poor shot selection, not getting the ball inside enough, basically no real basketball analysis at all. He was just disappointed we weren't hitting the ultra low percentage shots we were taking.

For better or worse, the true commanding leader on this team isn't the coach, but Lowry. The combination of Dwane and Kyle's personalities has determined this. Dwane simply can't tell Kyle what to do without Kyle revolting. We saw this happen two seasons ago when Kyle lost his starting job to Jose, and then stopped trying for the rest of the year.

A lot of the success that this team has is derived from them being able to freelance a lot of the time. It's a unique situation, but one that's worked out very well over the past year and a half. And given how most of them are wired, this means the ball won't be going inside a heck of a lot.
Your telling me there is a possibility that DC knows JV is the better option / mistmatch in certain scenarios (yesterday being one of them)

But Kyle Lowry is the one preventing JV from getting ISO post ups?...

I really doubt that is the case, and if it truly is the case, then thats sad as fuck, and Kyle Lowry is a piece of shit person/low iq basketball player. Yes his iq must be lower than mine even though I just sit at home and observe. I see this very visibility with pure clarity, and so does everyone in my surroundings , this forum, heck.. even leo rautlins.

Now if Dwayne Casey does not have enough authority to say "Guys this is the play we are running whether we like it or not" then he needs to fired as soon as possible. It means he has no control of this team, the players don't respect him nor trust his strategy.

But what leads me to believe that you are incorrect sir, is that Dwayne Casey chooses who is benched and who is playing. I never see Kyle Lowry in DC's ear commanding the in game substitutions, therefore he must be calling plays and commanding the offence as well.

I strongly believe if Casey wants JV to get the ball on a post up ISO, then his team has to follow orders by compulsion, if not Masai needs to either fire him or trade / fine the players.

Comes down to practice. If the Bucks length prevents the easy dumps low in the post by guards what is option #2. Its easy to put four touches on the whiteboard but harder to give players options they can try. Casey uses ISO shooting and passing.

                  • I don't have time to reference all threads from last year, but I did find 2 that referenced the Hawks as a treadmill team, and no one corrected that statement on a board that loves to argue. That said, maybe some of you just weren't around for those threads.

If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

They were a treadmill team until they upgraded the coach. We saw them start to truly change in the playoffs last year, and this year they have really blossomed. They got off the treadmill by firing Larry Drew and hiring coach Bud. I knew coach Bud would make a difference, but just how big a difference is pretty mind blowing. Just makes me want to replace Casey even more.

Same coach as last year when people here were still calling them a treadmill team.

By all means they still looked like one most of last year, but it takes time to fully implement your system, especially when your previous system was an iso heavy mess. They really came on strong in the playoffs, and now we're seeing them reap the rewards of upgrading the coach and system.

Not sure if know but last year was the 1st year with coach Bud.

Horford was also injured, which I take into account.

Ya but let's be honest Hawks have been playing some incredible basketball once they got their system down. Over the first 10 games of the year they looked to be who they were last year, a top-half East team with no real future past the 2nd round. They've made a huge leap and their players are playing amazing but still playing in their system.

No one could've guessed this unless they really believed in Coach Bud, and it's hard to make that leap on a first time coach, no matter who's assistant he was.
