Name the guards on teams that we are likely to face in the playoffs, that he can keep up with.....it's eye opening.
It's clear something is not right vs the past, the question is what is it and can it be rectified?

Yeah that's the mystery. What we saw from most of last year seems to be gone.

Remember this from back in March:

      What happened to this guy?

And that's just on defense. He's shooting 32.7% from 3 this year. That's super awful. His career average is 37.6%, but that went down from 38.2% if you don't include this year's stats.

He's a big reason why we're a lottery team. His regression this year is worse than Pascal's bubble season.

Nagging injuries, no fast twitch response, bet on yourself has hit its ceiling, too short, likely some internal issues between him and Scottie, perhaps GTJr.

I really believe it's time to move on from him for younger assets. Unless getting Achiuwa and Otto back and this team goes on a tear, time to shake it up; leaving it as is is irresponsible management as we're being passed by traditional also-rans.

There's definitely something physical going on. We saw this last season too right before the break and then as the season ended where he started to scuffle and then miss games, so it isn't entirely new. It sort of happened in the bubble season even where he started to have some physical issues as the season wore on. He plays a lot of hard minutes and he isn't built like Pascal, OG and Barnes or even Trent.

            • Big decision coming up for Bobby and Masai.

I guess "Fred VanVleet didn't work hard enough in the off-season" on his body.

There's a great headline for Doug Smith. He can thank me later.

                • Honestly, I think we can all agree that work ethic has never been nor will it be a problem with vanvleet. In fact it might even work against him if he is trying to play injured to "help the team".

He's coming up to the most important point of his career with likely his largest contract. He's not going to take himself out even if he is injured. It's gotta be a management not coaches decision.

He won't sit out by choice. Its not who he is. He was also mentored by Kyle who was the same way.

From Grange's latest today on the Pacers game:

"...gave his back a five full days to get right after leaving the game against the Los Angeles Clippers with spasms. He said on the weekend that it’s something he’s trying to do more this season: give nagging injuries a chance to rest and heal and then play at full strength, rather than try to tough games out while playing at less than full health.

But something doesn’t seem to be computing. Either his back is still not right or VanVleet is otherwise hindered, because it was hard to overlook how poorly he played down the stretch against the Pacers."

So it sounds like he is actually planning on sitting out stretches but it isn't helping. That's not good.

I don't know if load management is something the Raps want accommodate Fred with going forward. Like I said earlier it's a big decision for Masai and Bobby with Fred heading into free agency.

If he really is injured, then he isn't helping his contract situation by playing the way he is now.

But also notice how the media immediately, and unprompted, comes to Fred's defense with excuses for his poor play.
