Masai/Bobby/Tolzman need to really improve pro scouting & focus on finding the next Jalen Brunson (pre-Knicks). When the Mavs squandered opportunities over 2 seasons to extend him for 4 yrs / $55M, the Raps should've been all over that with an extend + sign & trade.

But no.... Nurse/Bobby/Masai's heads were so far up Fred's butt as the successor to Lowry as franchise PG, that not only did we not look at bringing in other NBA ready PGs to compete with Fred for that spot - we drafted a guy we thought was a Fred clone (Malachi, aka Red VanVleet).

And you're right. Not Fred's fault if the franchise wants to keep building him up and keep paying him more and more. I pointed out Tyus Jones as lower cost Fred replacement... but even he could be pricing himself out of value range in his next contract.
They likely had zero interest in Brunson. Not their type of player. Awful, awful defender. Truly elite on offence. You can argue they should look for those types but it really is just he's not their type as is.

We couldn't afford Tyus Jones. I was all over him as an MLE target, but he re-signed for a good bit more than that.

Lets be honest, there is no point in providing video evidence. Most people have already made up their mind about Fred and some are all the way at the extreme where it doesn't matter what he does, he sucks. Already evidenced by him having a 20 20 game and people critiquing because he missed shots and only focusing on that aspect.

He isn't perfect, doesn't always do the right thing, but he isn't as bad as some people make him out to be.
which is precisely what I basically outlined. he is both a good player but it seems like right now we have maximized the value that he can have on this specific team.

I think you have to look at several situations that he could go to and facilitate a sign and trade. Charlotte is one, the Suns are another, MAYBE orlando if you are willing to take on Jonathan Isaac's contract (partial guaranteed for this year of 7.5 mill then becomes fully non guaranteed the following year for 17.5 I PREFER THIS) and you coerce them into giving you one of their two picks (the later one makes the most sense).

Outside that Houston may want vets and they have a lot of seconds so there is something there perhaps.

Perhaps the Raps front office shouldn't be so dogmatic as to always have "a type", making them blind to other types of talent. Get talented guys who can play basketball and fit together and let the coach craft a system to blend that talent together. I think they're still carrying baggage from the Lou Williams season. Gotta let it go and stop over-compensating.

It's not like we're killing it on defense anyway. Knicks had a slightly worse defense than Raps, but still had a +3 net rating, while Raps had +1.5.

That said... every front office could've jumped on Brunson at that price, but didn't. Nobody could've predicted his breakout (other than Brunson, his dad, and an RR internet keyboard warrior. )

I don't like brunson personally (though good on you for predicting his ascendance), I hope they move away from shoot first point guards. Either give scottie some burn to run the team or find a real PG. Even lowry as a scoring guard was hard to stomach sometimes, at least earlier on in his Raps tenure when the team needed him to be a scorer. He passed more when the talent level around him rose and became a more complete point guard imo. I'm not sure the same can be said for Fred. Jak helped but fred just can't drive and finish or pass out of the paint like Lowry could. Fred, imo, needs the role player role card. 3rd or 4th option creator. If we don't have the roster to put him in that role then we need to beef up the team or move on from Fred.

Fred is an ideal 6th man, first guard off the bench. Then he can come in and fire away as he likes to.

If I'm Fred I choose the Magic over Raptors if pay is equal.

They will let him shoot at much as he wants. He has good young big men to play with. Competent backup guards so he doesn't need to play 40 mpg. A fan base that will be ecstatic just to make the play in. The weather, golf, beaches, no state tax, and a team desperate for a star he probably gets lots of local sponsorships.

It’s an absolute no brainer for Fred, if the Magic are willing to meet his salary demands. He’ll always get compared to, and fall short of, Lowry in Toronto. Zero pressure in Disney town.

He can also lord his ring, winning history and 1 FMVP vote over all the young guys in Orlando, like he so loved to do here.

if fred goes to orlando i would think it's to provide veteran leadership to a young up and coming group, not to become a star player for them or something. i don't imagine that's what orlando is looking for. they have paolo and franz and will be looking for those guys to expand their games. i would expect if fred went there his usage would be about the same as it was here, maybe even a little less.

that said i could see it being an appealing option for him for several reasons you stated, including playing on an ascending team, the nice weather and no state taxes, less pressure situation, etc.
